Why are most second hand Land Rover discovery 3 for sale by Trade only ?

Hello, A question more out of curiosity . When I look for a second hand Land Rover Discovery 3 in Autotrader or Exchange & Mart , the vast majority of the adverts ( 90% + ) appear to be placed by garages or the trade. Why are so few sold privately ? If I wanted to buy a second hand Land Rover discovery 3 where am I going to get the best deal ? Trade , Private sale or Auction ?

You don't mention age/price. My brother in law is also looking and I have suggested having a look at the auctions where they shift the lease cars such as Wilson's Autions . The price seems to be all over the place on these currently so you will probably need to take your time and figure out what is good price by checking around as much as possible. At least the auctions should indicate a base price.

Thanks, I guess I would be looking for something around 3 years old, Automatic and Leather seats and ideally around the £12,000 mark which seems to be quite a lot less than most of the traders are selling for.

At 3 years old its probably still likely to be stocked by a main dealer or specialist.

If dealers are asking much more for them at that age, how have you come to conclusion they're worth £12K?

My BIW bought an 05 from a dealer last year in Nottinghamshire and only paid 9995..... so 12k for a 3 y/o is about right, you can get a new one from the local main stealer for about 19 (in last weeks local paper).

Piston Heads had a private sale of more or less exactly what I am looking for for 12K ( Now Sold) . ( See Link below)

But the dealer prices for equivelent seem to be between 18-22K. The private sales seem to be few and far between for similar spec cars. Of the 200 or so for sale in Autotrader only a handfull (something like 10 ) were private sales. With the introduction of the Discovery 4 in September this year 19-22K just seems far too much to pay.

3 year old models will usually be sold at auction to a trade dealer or sold at main dealer forecourt hence why not many make it to private sale.

We`e had ours 2 months now, its 2 and a bit years old and we paid £17K from the main dealers, we traded in a Range Rover that was 4 years old.

We were looking around for 6 months before we found the one we bought and we found the same thing, that they were all advertised by traders with the odd one private which are snapped up straight away before we phoned up about them.

good luch with you search, they are lovely motors though the drive is slightly rougher than the Range Rover.

    Is your BIW's (?) definitely a Discovery 3?

Also, dont forget that prices bottomed out last year for cars - and 4x4's in particular - and have actually risen since, due to short supply of good used stock.

I did a quick check on autotrader - non franchised dealers seem to be asking £14.5K+ for an 06 one, main dealers £17K+. You would have to be very lucky to pick one up privately for £12K, though i guess its not impossible.

Have you a link to one new at £19K - seems very cheap if its a proper UK car - given its list price is over £30K.

If yu find one for £12,000 - could you let me know so I can stock up on them...?!

Everything at the minute is making well over the trade price. Whether it's a Corsa or Ferrari.

I'm not in the trade but from my experience the above is spot on, it was about this time last year that petrol went through the roof. There was talk of it staying that high or going even higher. Lots of 4x4 owners panicked as their values dropped drastically and they were no doubt worried about the fuel costs so sold their cars.
