I have an open fronted gas fire, no hearth. It was fitted by a Corgi fitter 3 years ago & no mention was made of needing a hearth. The same fire is still on display in the showroom, again with no hearth.:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0

Both mine and my parents fires are glass fronted - but if I'd had it mounted lower (low enough to look daft) then I would've needed a hearth. Its all to do with the proximity of heat to combustibles...0

I'd go to the showroom stolt and have a chat with them. We had a very long talk about exactly the same fire - you have different options don't you - balanced flue etc. The options appear to be endless.
Have a look at the Fire Ribbon by cvo as well if you have the budget, they are beautiful.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Hi,
We have a Gazco Studio Edge open fronted fire with no hearth. The fitter never mentioned it. This is what it looks like installed: http://stuartandlisashouse.blogspot.com/2009/02/we-now-have-working-fire-and-its.html
It does say it needs a 100mm hearth but mine hasnt! I agree it would spoil the look and I cant see how it would spit anything out onto the floor anyway!
We found the cheapest price on the internet then got a local shop to proce match!

hi yep we have been to several showrooms and they all start laughing at us, apparently for the cost of the studio edge its just a steel box and i suppose to the people in the know its alot of money for what it really is!! We were going for balanced flue to start with as its easier and its more efficient if its glass fronted but on our house the chimney breast is on the outside of the house and they would have to build a false chimney breast in the house to accomodate the pipework! so were going for a custom built jobbie with just granite lined insides and ribbon gas burners set low in the granite so you just see the flames (it was never intented to heat the room just for show really). But this other fitter came yesterday and reckons we can get away with the gazco studio 2, so might have negoiate the fitting costs with him.Listen to what people say, but watch what people what people do!!0 -

that looks really nice, exactly what my missus wants:p btu you have a much bigger fireplace than ours. Our house is only 10 years old and apparently they have crap fireplaces on the newer houses!!
We are going for something like this......
will have a wooden surround to get the longer shape.Listen to what people say, but watch what people what people do!!0 -
That looks lovely! The false chimney looks good, very modern!
We had to have ours lined as it leaked everywhere so that cost a small fortune! I think its completly worth it though! Cant wait for Christmas when we have a lovely fire to sit by!
Youll have to upload a piccy when you've got it finished! Not that Im nosey!

hmm they are talking about gather hoods for ours, i have to rip the old one out at the weekend so he can come back round as it was saying for the newer houses the builders just lined it with concrete!! likewise i'm going to forward the pic you sent home to my wife to have a look at, she will be jealous because she wanted the longer fireplace to start with, and no surround.:rotfl:Listen to what people say, but watch what people what people do!!0 -
We has a Faber Misty fitted end of last year and no hearth was required although it is glass fronted. It looks superb and kicks out a lot of heat."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0

Does it have to be a gas one? I have an electric one with the pebbles etc, and it looks great, mind you, we have never used it lol, but it does look very nice.:D0
