Hi susie and welcome, you can say as much or as little as you feel able.

Lidlest, I think that your advice can help a lot of people, but not everyone reacts the same. I do appreciate what you're saying.

Thanks harrie. Just by posting today I feel like a great weight has lifted from my shoulders. My OH and 2DDs don't know how bad drinking has become and I don't feel ready to talk to them all yet. Not sure if I want to stop or cut down. I just know I'm not happy about the amount I drink. Having come from an alcoholic family (Father, Grandmother, 2 Aunts, sister) and having my childhood destroyed by alcohol you would think I would be teetotal. Sadly, I know it doesn't work like that. I do feel now that I have acknowledged my problem and had such a lovely welcome from you guys, I can start to tackle it.

Whatever some people think about this thread, I just thank God for it, and all of you of course.

I'm having counselling, I get 8 sessions, 5 down, 4 weekly and 4 fornightly. This is via work. Most companies will only pay for 4. It is secret from work.

Alcoholism is a symptom for me, I will be delighted if/when I find the route cause.

I couldn't do an AA meeting, another symptom, I cant do meetings at work. This year I've managed to sit through my lads scout presentation night, up to the AGM bit. And my daughters school concert, I got better as it went on. That's for my children. I get a seat at the bacl, end closest to the door.

I find anything with more than a couple of people very hard. Outside Mrs Mac and the little Macs, including the rest of our families.

Wine and beer is in the garage, hasn't been touched since early March, did fancy a beer when cutting the grass, had a coke instead.

Spirits is my downfall. When I have them, it is pure auto pilot, from going to the shop, until I fall into bed. I feel my mind saying no, every other part of me says yes!!!!! When the no wins, I will be so happy when no wins.

I'm really lucky, Mrs Mac doesn't understand at all, she thinks I'm weak and pathetic. But she does love me and likes me a lot, when sober. Tear in eye. My children have been very tolerant, 11 & 13, they don't know the background, but have accepted my odd behaviour.

For those that haven't read the previous thread

I've drunk since I was 18, now 41, my parents and their families have always drunk big time, scottish! I've always been able to afford to drink, always had friends who drank.

What was a couple of cans a night turned in to a wee tipple or two, then vodka as it hides the smell, at the time. Then a quick slurp prior to work and a gulp at lunch, just to see me through;)

Went to visit my sis and hubby, had a phonecall with him a few days previously. First night he comes out with your not happy are you, why? My bil has had a strange life and has had counselling, is also very, very good at helping people with problems, bit black and white, but very good.

A couple of days later I happened on the original thread, I think it had been going for about 3 weeks. I just hadn't seen it before.

Rang the works confidential help line on the Monday, got a phonecall that afternoon, had my first appointment on the Friday, could have had it straight away, but that would have involved asking for time off suddenly.

From the Friday I had 20 alcohol free days, not been so good for the last 10. Have crumbled quite a bit, but not back to my usual standard. I do need to get a grip.

    Hi susiesaver, welcome

Is that true shirl? Were you asked to talk with the princess of wales.

I'm so shy, I would have run a mile. :)

susiesaver, simple question, what do you want to do, if you just think you drink to much, cut down, I know sounds simple. If you think you need to stop, give it a go, if it works good, if not you need to talk to your OH first, then your doctor. Other way around if easier. But OH will need to know. This thread is a crutch, you need more than one, family, friends and your GP. GP doesn't need to be involved, but should be aware if you have drink problem. Embarrassing I know:o

Shirl, I'm with you, no way!

Matt, you're a bit like me I think, happy to be the centre of attention of my own making, but to be made the centre of attantion, no way.

PS run out of mugs a tea spoons, she's only been gone a day:eek:
