Alcohol self help thread II

As someone who is an alcoholic and been down the slippery slope to self destruction IE "drinking aftershave,surgical spirits and hair lacquer" I know what its like trying to get off drink.I went my merry way until 28th March 2001 when I went too Alcoholics Anonymous and listened.I had been there before but all I could think of that time was that this is a lot of bloody religious nutters and no way was I going to listen to that crap.Fortunately when I asked girl I knew was in fellowship for help she explained that I had an allergy too Alcohol and as soon as I had taken that 1st drink it set up compulsion for more and at that I could indentify with myself as thats what always happened no matter how much I told myself I would just have couple and stop.When I stopped in 2001 I was going through 3 bottles of Vodka and Gin every day and it was really hell getting off it and staying stopped.Now drink just doesnt bother me in slightest and I go too parties,dances and functions and no one seems to bother when I say I dont drink and thats end of it.In saying that its not advisable too go too such places etc when your just coming of it because Alcohol has a very persistent mind and always tries too get you back on it.A lot of folk make same mistake as I did in thinking AA was religious but although you will find folk talking about God its about a God of their own understanding and I have many friends of all denominations.Myself I believe that if it had,nt been for the folk in AA I would have been dead by now.Sorry for the long speil but thats way Alcohol affected me but then as I,ve been sober this last 5 years it might help someone out there

Thanks Chas My dad reckons the same as you, an allergy, quite high rate of it on the islands, comes from the Norse invaders, or the islands he comes from. To some extent blames himself for my problem, because it is hireditary!?!. Might be, who knows. Al.
