please excuse my ignorance but what exactly is an enabler? I've seen that word used loads of times on various threads but I've never been able to pin down an exact meaning.

This is some interesting reading to begin with... then there is plenty more information if you want on the net.

Well reading that, one thing is for sure, I haven't got an enabler. My problems are my own and no one covers up for me.

This thread has been very helpful all the same.

I have to say, having been reading along, that the 'propping up' of alcoholics on this thread does the alcoholics no good. An alcoholic doesn't need sympathy when they crash and burn after not drinking for a couple of days they need a good prod up the backside. The needy alcoholic wants everyone to join them on their journey, and understand them, and ENABLE them.

I was and i guess always will be an alcoholic. The one thing that sorted me out was when I hit rock bottom, my friends didn't want to hang anymore and I could find no more enablers for my problem. Without enablers there is just a choice, I chose sobriety and never looked back.... I honestly feel this thread of people hugging and saying aww i'm sorry things didn't go your way does no good for the self confessed alcohol abusers on this thread.

I say this with all the hope that people will get the help they need, sound professional help, not a place to come to feel ok about being a current addict, not a comfortable safe haven to continue a downward spiral. You either want to quit or you don't, you will hopefully reach the day you want to quit. If you argue that you do want to quit, but its just so hard, I would counter-argue that you don't yet want it enough.
I would never have had professional help, never, I never will and I never have.

I could not ever go to a AA meeting, its not something I ever would be able to do. I would die before I ever did that.
This thread did for me, what most AA meetings did for the average bloke on the street.
That is wake me up, I was already down and out, ready to face my maker, ready to die.

I'm still ready to die, still close to the edge, still can't see a real reason to carry on. This thread has given me hope, why if it should give me hope, should anyone try to stop it.

Its not perfect, nothing is, but it helps me and others. What more need I say.

lidlest, you were lucky, to some extent. you wanted to stop, and you found your way of stopping. you have been there, so you know how hard it is. as you will appreciate, what works for one does not necessarily work for another. we are all different, its what makes the world go round. the people that contribute to this thread have to find their own way, and if this thread does anything to help even one person, then it will have been worth it. ok, its not your bag, so best to do what i do when i look at a thread that doesn't "do it" for me, walk away, and leave us to it. thank you.

    xx

glad you can see the smileys. my pc isn't even loading the usual mse smileys now (confused head here!)

glad to see your count starting to go back up, i have to say its no wonder everyones on a downer atm, but here's to the coming week now. x

at least you've got one egg mich, thats one more than i've ever got for the last 15/16 years. just done the easter bunny thingy, hiding the eggs for ds, he's long since grown out of the easter bunny idea, but once a mum, always a mum, and it seems so much more exciting than just shoving a carrier bag under his nose!
