Socket overload

Is it safe to use a 4 gang extension lead plugged into a 5 gang extension lead from one socket. The extension leads between them have plugged in:

    2 pcs
    2 monitors
    1 lamp
    2 fans
    1 mobile phone charger

    this is in the workplace.

I say the main socket is overloaded but person who has attached second ext. lead to save uplugging lamp/fan etc. to charge phone says it's okay.

I'd say it was overloaded as a fan can consume up to 3kw in it's own right! Depends on the rating of yours though. Not all appliances give wattage ratings though, but if you have the current and voltage, it can be worked out.

Why not tell your employer to invest in one of these? Not only does it have sufficient socets, but it has a switch, so you can switch it off overnight if needs be. I have 2 in my room and have found them to be very effective and useful.

EDIT: Sorry, just realised they are out of stock, but they usually have them in stock in-store.

Rubbish! Can you give an example of this? It says fan not fan heater! A typical desk fan is less than 50W e.g. here

2 pcs 250w each, assuming maximum load
2 monitors CRTs use about 100w each, LCDs about 60w each
    1 lamp 60w bulb, possibly 100w
    2 fans 60w each
1 mobile phone charger 3 watts

So, assuming each appliance is turned on at maximum load, the most that extension will see is 923w. 13amp fuses can handle 3000w loads - so, on the assumption the extension is capable of carrying 3000w, it's quite safe in my eyes.

In the workplace, you probably should not be using extension leads at all for a permanent set-up. That's the rule at our office.

I said CAN be UP TO 3kw. I don't know, nor do you, what type of fan it is. Therefore we can't know what it is rated at.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

So you can't give an example then! Your electrical knowledge is clearly very limited.

I'm glad you can see into this persons office and tell the exact ratings of all her equipment. Not being able to do so is not a sign of limitation of electrical knowledge. It just shows I don't have psychic powers.

Because they are on a savings exercise and you have to go through special orders blah blah blah......... so it wouldn't be here for a year or so. Someone tried to order a new desk mouse and was turned down as there was no money! They are cheap ball mice so they found an old one somewhere, gave it a clean and bobs your uncle.

They are LCD monitors. 2 fans are desk fans for cooling but there is also a heater fan (but it smells a bit) that gets used in the winter. The lamps are halogen 50w I think
