Should I accept cash?

I have put an item on ebay and someone clicked buy it now and then asked a question could they pay cash on collection. Now I did not really want to do this as I could get false notes. I advertised it as paypal only. when I replied back to say its got to be paypal, the person replied saying they had recently changed banks and not set paypal up yet.
Can they set up paypal straightaway? I don't know this person and they might be genuine but what should I do?

You could always accept paypal, but then try to show proof of delivery when they do an item not delivered later on.
    Take the cash.
  • Hi there.
I really do not advise you to accept cash.
For one, they can say that they have never received the item....& what proof do you have that they have?None.
You are then minus your item, with (perhaps) dodgy cash & definitely a negative feedback, where you do not know WHAT story they may make up about you.
    ...Damaged eBay feedback?.Maybe.
Two..yes,it is easy & though may take up to a few days to set up a Paypal account..any eBayer worth bothering with will have a Paypal account.
If you said Paypal only, then why did they not message you before the item ended, explained their situation & asked you that if they won the item, were you willing to wait a few days for payment until their Paypal account was sorted?
Sounds iffy to me. If it makes you feel uncomfortable, then there is a reason that it's making you feel that way.

and if you accept cash what proof does the buyer have that they paid? How can they claim non-delivery without any proof of payment?

I have accepted cash on Ebay items up to £900, and in all honesty wish more people would do cash on collection or delivery.

At least you dont have to worry for the next 45 days that some crooked buyer doesn't try a Paypal dispute on.

Oh, and did anyone mention the benefit of no Paypal charges?

  • I understand what you are saying, but it does make me feel nervous when someone is asking you to bend the rules. I wonder why they are. They could say that they have sent a postal order in the negative feedback that they leave for you...? It all adds up to the possibility of a negative, fellow eBayers doubting your honesty & less sales in the long run.
  • Oh,& if they are honest & genuine buyers, then it isn't a very safe way of going about their purchase. As a previous post states that you could accept cash then file a non payment dispute. This tells you that either the buyer is naive, dodgy or just willing to take the chance.

Its not "advised" as paypal/eBay wont get their comission if you accept cash.

Take the cash, i have done this a few times, avoided the fees and got a decent deal.

Thats a bit of a generalisation, I sold a watch to a Ebayer with over 200 feedback, when I met him and did cash on delivery (for £750) it turned out he was a QC. Hardly "naive, dodgy or just willing to take a chance", nor was the doctor who drove 50 miles to pay me £450 for a digi-SLR.

There has to be an element of trust in Ebay, the seller takes a risk and the buyer takes a risk in a transaction - the risk just changes slightly depending on the payment method, and as the seller, COD makes that risk a lot smaller.
