  • Wow I just tried to check this out and they directed me back to Southern Electric who I am currently with and stated that the rates are the same and they are not??

    Peak (standard) £0.1184

This is the new charges as per April apparently jumping from

    Peak = £0.1030

Quite a jump and certainly different from your prices?????

I've been on economy 7 ever since we moved in ( over 25 yrs ago). It's only yesterday that I asked eon how many hours of cheap electricity I get, he said 7 but then told me to hold the line. After a few minutes he said 10 hours. I didn't know there was economy 10 till I read this thread. My rates after the price rise on 8th Feb. and signing up to the protection rate are

    primary units - 24.7p
    secondary units - 10.52p
    night - 4.74p

    I don't pay standing charge.

Have I been paying a lot more for my gas over the years by not being on economy 10??! I'm really confused with all this E7, E10 business.

Firstly you do pay a standing charge (unless you use ZERO electricity during the "peak" hours) - that's why the primary units are 24.7p (a standing charge in all but name) for the first x units per quarter and then revert to the secondary unit rate

Where does gas come into economy 10?

If you have gas to heat water and home I would suggest you probably shouldn't be on ANY economy electric tarrif (E7 or E10) as you pay more for the "day" units than a single rate tarrif

You can estimate whet the "break even" point will be (where it pays to be on an economy tarrif) if you have details of your day/night usage and unit rates for the standard tarrif for your area.

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

Economy 10 is classed as a 'comfort tariff' and is therefore, generally, more expensive than having Economy 7 or a single rate meter. You would only need to be on E10 if you are an all electric property and therefore have electric radiators or storage heaters. You will have 2 meter readings for E7 and 3 for E10 - you should also have two supply numbers (or MPAN - meter point administration number) if you are on E10.

bilibala if you are on Economy 7 you get 7 hours of cheaper electric during the night - depending on where you are depends on what the switiching times are (and even in each area not everyones meter switches at the same time) but as a general rule it is normally somewhere between midnight and 9am.

Just called eon, the customer service agent had a look at my account and said I was better off staying on economy 7 as my night usage is quite high, over 40%. So, no change for me then.

Emmsie21 : I'm really confused now about the hours of cheap electricity, the agent quoted my cheap electricity hours as, winter 9pm-7am, summer 10pm - 8am. I'll call them again in the next
few days. Actually, I could check my meter tonight and see when the night meter starts moving.

Some (all?) parts of Norweb actualy have the 7 hours split into 2 periods, something like 10pm - midnight and 2am-7am (ish) - perhaps that is the issue?

If you have more than 7 hours in total it doesn't sound like E7 though...

Personally, I'd say never accept what an energy company tells you as gospel - work it out for yourself!

i.e. how have they worked out the 40%? is it from the total readings on your meter (very rough, but could be well out if you have stopped using economy heating in the past couple of years) or based on the past 12 months?

Which parts of Norweb have this timing for the night rate?

bilibala - have a look at the meter and see what time it swithes to the night rate - if you can't let me know what region you are in and I will have a look at the switching times for you.
