If you are on an economy10 type tariff, including 'heatwise', 'warmwise', etc., you cannot switch suppliers using the usual automatic procedure, so there is no facility to factor in the rates on the switching sites.

As far as I know, you have to contact prospective suppliers for their rates in your area before selecting a new supplier, you would then have to compare the new tariffs available to see which is the cheapest. The switch then has to be organised manually between the old and new suppliers.

It can be tricky, few suppliers accept economy10 customers at all, some do not accept new customers. You could convert to a standard economy7 tariff, but you would obviously lose the benefits of the economy10 tariff.

Have a read through this thread, you may find it interesting - I made some suggestions regarding which suppliers to try.

I'm on the Economy 10 tariff through Scottish Hydro. I have been informed that as from May prices will be:
    service charge (per day) 18.35
    standard energy unit price 9.03
    off-peak unit price 5.83

    off peak periods are: 4.30 AM-7.30AM, 1.30PM-4.30PM, 8.30PM-12.30AM

There is a single meter which automatically switches from one rate to the other at the specified times.
There is something that puzzles me though, my meter is actually half an hour wrong i.e. cheap rate starts at 5.00AM and finishes at 8.00AM etc when I pointed this out to the Hydro people they offered to change the meter but I said not to bother as I was still getting 10 hours at cheap rate. The thing is, when the clocks change for British Summer Time the meter seems to change as well, it still clicks over to the different rate at 5.00AM - how can this be, it surely can't be a radio signal - as I said my meter is set to the wrong time. Puzzling!!!

Do you have a mechanical timer switch?

The meter is digital but there is an audible click when it changes from one rate to the other. If it were mechanical/clockwork surely it would now change rates at 4.00AM rather than 5.00Am

    Hi,

I am thinking of changing from Scottish power to Scottish hydro for the economy 10 tariff but cannot find rates on their web site, can you confirm what the up to date rates for payment by ddm are if you are still with them.

I am currently on comfort plus control which is OK, the only problem I found last winter (First Year In House) was the weird times they switched the storage heaters on and off with heaters going cold at 5pm on occasions and also had 3 days with no heating at all as it never kicked in?, with economy 10 I would be able to switch the storage radiators on with individual time switches.

Overall I did not find it that expensive having electric only heating using 6081 heating units from may 06 to April 07 and 4230 domestic units during the same period. I am sure with a bit of management I could take advantage of the times the meter would be on cheap rate. The only thing I might miss is being able to stick the water and fire in the lounge on anytime at low rate instead of when the meter is on low rate.

I take it scottish hydro have an online service as well where you can log your readings?

Any help would be much appreciated

    Thanks

    Hi peat,

Thanks for assisting, There must be different charges for each area, i got an email back from them today :

The Economy 10 tariff for your area (Scottish Power) is as follows:-
Standing Charge - 22.66p per day inc VAT Standard Day Energy - 8.62p per unit inc VAT Off Peak Energy - 4.97p per unit inc VAT
It would be necessary for Scottish Power to change your tariff to General Domestic before we could take the supply over.

I noticed that atlantic who are part of the same group are offering 1 months free by rebate in month 13 so have emailed them to see if they offer the tariff as well.

    Thanks

Scottish Power(the company) is not the same thing as the Scottish Power Area.

Those people who live in the area of Scotland where Scottish Power used to have a monopoly can now get all of the electricity companies to supply them.
