I was playing Monopoly the other night there and i got a "Bank error in your favour, collect £200"
I tried to contact the bank in question but no response, can you let me know how you get on honeymonster?
Thanks in advance0 -
people are saying move the money into a high interest account until the bank ask for it back. is this practical - if you walked into your local barclays et al and tried to open an account and deposit 40000 aren't they legally obliged to make a few checks as to its source?0

We have to ask, but you don't have to tell. You can just lie to us, anyway - if it was drug money and you said "granny gave it to me" we'd have no way of knowing. What would William Shatner do?0 -

Pretty sure if you were high at the time or had white powder around your nose.....0 -
OP, I totally agree with you here. I too would want to find a 100% legal way to keep the money. Why not contact some lawyers and ask for advice? Some people here are taking the moral high ground acting like they would spend all their free time trying to pay it back. Well that's very easy to say when the 40k has hit someone elses bank account and not yours.
I also would do what someone mentioned and stick in a savings account, but assume that it will be paid back in the future. The process will probably take a while so you should make a quick few quid out of it in interest.
The most important thing is to ensure you make all reasonable attempts to return the money to its owner - if you don't do that then you won't have a leg to stand on if it ever went to court in years to come. I would make copies of all letters sent and received, record all phone conversations when you call them to find out how to pay it back, keep a record of everything so that if anyone tells you to keep it or just leave it for now you will have hard evidence.
The thing to consider is if you didn't make a reasonable attempt to pay it back now, it will always be at the back of your mind for the rest of your life. If they found out in 20 years, even though there may be a law that states after X years the money is yours, they probably have the kind of top lawyers that will find a loophole to force you to pay it back, what if you haven't got it? Lose your house?0 -
I thought all cash movements over 10k were recorded and forwarded to some agency for agent smith to get you with
Probably just a movie I saw
I'd definitely put the money earning interest somewhere
The thing with b&b was the debts outweighed anything valuable there, the government did that company a favour if not the actual owners. Eventually they might make a profit in return for all the debt they carry but thats their gain or loss and it'd be perverse to credit anyone but the present backers0 -
I'm staggered that the bank hasn't realised where the money is as there will be a clear audit trail.
After several weeks I'd be starting to wonder 'what if?' too though......0 -

Because Mexico has no problems?
The funny thing is that you're suggesting £40,000 is worth running from the law, leaving your family etc. for...What would William Shatner do?0 -
Have you seen the news in mexico recently, not the best place to carry around alot of money
I'd just have the interest, no need to be greedy0
