  • A friend has lost her Tax credits (she is a working single parent of 1), she moved house in June and informed them of her new address (which they admit to her that she did) But they have been sending correspondance to her old address, of which would have beem the renewal I assume. They have now stopped the payments and because it's gone to the "Stop" department all she can do is apeal it which will take up to 4 months apparantly.? The crazy thing is, it looks like she's now going to have to give up her job so she can afford to live, doesn't make any sense and the person on the phone was aware of this but was very unhelpful. Does anyone have any experience / advice of what she could do.?
  • Quick question, I'm self employed on a low income with no taxable profits. I've been claiming WTC but I've now been sent a bill for a full repayment of the WTC that was paid to me for the period 2011-12, and also for some of this year.

What I'd like to know is, is it a requirement of WTC that I actually pay income tax to be able to claim WTC as this is the only reason I can think of that the WTC office would stop my payments or demand the money back as my work hours and other circumstances have not changed.

I pay the standard NIC's as required. If it makes any differenced I am a Sole Trader not a director of a ltd company.
  • Hi All,

Hopefully a simple question. Looking into claiming Child Tax Credits for the first time!

My question is this - do I need to declare income from a rental property even if I am not making money on it??

Bsically, I am in the forces, living in quarters and rent out my house that I used to live in. I had to move into MQ's on posting,so was effectively forced to rent my house out. I recieve £650 rent pm (£560 after agent fees), but pay £747 for the mortgage on this property, so nearly £200 pm shortfall after fees.

    Any help gratefully recieved!

    Thank you!!

If you're making a loss on it, it's not income! In most cases income for Tax Credit purposes is the same as income for Income Tax purposes.

  • Called Tax Credits Helpline to tell them of a change in my salary - the girl I spoke to asked if I had any children in full time education. Yes, was my answer, and she said that the child wasn't on the claim. Why not? She always has been.

It's not clear, at all, in my opinion, that you need to explicitly tell them if your child stays on at school after 16 - she hasn't been on the claim since she turned 16 (she'll be 18 in November) and they will only backdate it three months, so we have lost out on nearly two years of tax credits. In all the renewals, and changes we've called about, nobody before has even mentioned it to us.

This is typical of the reasons I hate the tax credits system, along with how they are just not structured well enough to cater for people like me that run a business that pays dividends.

    Hi,

we've been told we owe overpayments on tax credits and they are trying to collect it because they stopped our CTC because they said we didn't renew in time(I hopefully have grounds to dispute this but I don't know how). Anyway the reason for overpayment they have said is an increase iin salary. As far as I was aware we were on the min anyway so how can an increase in salary affect this? Is there any where I can go to check what we should have been getting each year? When did child tax credit start so I know where to work out from?

  • Do the tax credit want the gross figure before expenditure or the nett figure after management fees, insurances etc etc?

It's the same figure you would put on your Tax Return, so net of allowable expenses.

  • hi just to let you all know that i put in my details to the HM checker on martins site & twice it said i was entitled to 1,111 pounds a year based on my income. twice i phoned up ( second time to clarify first information i was given by an advisor) & again he took me through it and said i was not entitled to any working tax credit. I am single with no dependants & work 30 hrs or more. thought i may be entitled to the 50+ payment but alas, no.
the guy says that the HM checker is faulty??? so have complained & asked to make a complaint as this is frustratingly misleading for HM to allow people to continue to check. he did say that they were aware of the fault but even two months ago i checked & its still the same. no wonder they are in a complete mess! anyway thought i would let you all know, dont trust the checker & i intend to try again next month and if it is still the same i am going to almighty complain in writing.
  • hi i had a similar problem 4 years back. it took me a year to sort it out & the rules clearly state if she can prove it was their error she can have it all sorted quickly. the point being that if she can prove the date (possibly ) the time that she phoned with the correct info then it is their error. they can also check back on the call as they are all recorded due to DATA protection laws.
She must put this complaint in writing & clearly write on the top of the envelope '' Complaints Department' she can find the address on the website. any error they make has to be dealt with quickly and any monies owed to her paid ASAP. this saved me 3,400 pounds in the end & believe it or not a HM officer that came to my house was the one to advise me ( off the record ) what to say & do. it worked. stressful time but worth it in the end. Hope your friend gets all sorted. PS dont know who her phone company is but you can get an itemised call sheet printed from them anyway.
