There is another thread with a very similar subject matter but, it became confused whether it was for older travellers or pre-existing medical conditions. So I have started this thread so that it is completely clear who it refers to. The people who have most difficulty in obtaining travel insurance for a reasonable fee are those over 65, who have an existing or previous medical condition. My friend who had a heart attack over 3 years ago has had real problems in obtaining a reasonable quote. North America and the Caribbean are the worst area as the premiums shoot up. He and his wife were hoping to go on a 17 day holiday for their Golden WA, to New England, which incorporated a cruise. The lowest quote for ins. so far is £800 !

see https://www.medi-travel.co.uk for more info on this, over 65's with medical conditions are high risk, so expensive, but there are a surprising number of places that can cover them, so well worth shopping around - columbus direct can do it (over the phone), rock can (insurefor?), Options (medi-quote?), and all clear (https://www.allclearinsurance.co.uk), also saga, british heart foundation and diabetes UK all have reccomendations or specific schemes for the conditions they represent. Good luck with it, worth shopping around, but a north american cruise is pretty much the worst (ie most expensive) scenario possible...

    HTH!

they too only cover uptp age 64, but for pre-existing medical conditions they have a simple disclaimer. Thdey seem great
I phoned ACE Travel Insurance, and they confirmed that provided you can agree to their declaration they don't need any further details (although they have agreed they will include info on my pre-existing medical condition on file).

So, I now have 3 weeks insurance for USA for only £33. This compares to £141 quoted by Medicover - a massive moneysaving :j

The polices offered by Fortis also look to have a reasonable medical declaration, but were coming in at between £50 & £80. I found Fortis polices through Wisemans (Laterlife), Accomplishtravel, BAA, Scuba.co.uk and the British Mountaineering Council.

The answer is that if you make a claim and have not informed them of ANY pre-existing medical condition, you will not be covered. A simple phone call to them will probably get it noted on your policy and you will then be covered as before. This applies to ANY travel insurance policy, you MUST tell them about any medical condition.
Even if the claim has no connection with a pre-exisiting medical condition, they can refuse to accept the claim.

  • SmilePlus bank current account pays 3.04% on balances and offers 'free' annual travel insurance and in the small print it says the only age barrier is that you must start the insurance before you are 80 yeras old. As I am 79 can anyone say if I will be still covered when I pass 80?
