Timeshare in Spain

Hello

My husband wants to look at buying timeshare in Spain (near Salou) but we would want 3 weeks in August and 1 week October half term (as i expect most other people will).

We are complete novices with timeshare and havent a clue where to start or where to look.

Is Timeshare worth it and is there any tip or advice anyone can share?

Thank you for help in advance....

Search on t'internet for 'timeshare'+'we can't give it away'+'maintenance costs very expensive'
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.
  • Try and find a reliable resale company. There is a timeshare governing body that you may find by googling, who couls advise you.

i have a timeshare in Tenerife which we have owned for nearly 8 years and enjoyed but, be awear of the maintence cost's alot. Ours started at £250 and last year was £700 as they changed from charging in Euro's to pounds. Mine was orginally with a small company but about 3 years ago were brought out by Club la Costa who really are into the "hard sell" avoide if you can.

Really investigate the sites and if possible go and inspected befor you buy. I paid £2500 8 years ago for 1 week in July for a 2 bedroom apartment with pool, bars and restraunts on site with about 20 min walk from the beach.

Overall i don't think i would buy one again but, i have enjoyed using it on the whole.

Don't buy any points though we did and really regretted it as you have to pay maintence on those too, aswell as the cost of buying them just stick with timeshare itself.

    Good luck

  • Thank you Curly Cabbage.

I am still not convinced its the right thing to do tho and think i would prefer to just book yearly so i am still trying to weigh it all up, so your experience is helpful. Cheers :j

I've also had a timeshare in Tenerife for more than 10yrs.
    I bought a resale fo £2,500
My maintence started out at £250 it's been going up for a while £330 last year this year for the 1st time they are charging in Euro's not pounds & it's 426 Euro.

The nice thing about timeshare we know what we're getting each year acc/ people, resort.
Also with owning for so long we've made a lot of good friends & know who's going to be there each year. If you have children they make friends that they'll see every year & keep in touch with.

I would say I have had my money's worth out of it but as there's only the 2 of us using it now & we could get away for the same costs somewhere different. We're going in a couple of weeks.
The main problem with owning in the Canaries is the price of flights they are quite dear, so that makes our holiday about £1,000

What you've got to work out is the total costs every year & compare it with a package holiday.

I would say don't buy a new build they're so expensive!

You're best bet is to try one before you buy.

Why would anybody want a timeshare? you never actually own anything, other people use it for most of the year, nobody wants to buy them if you need to sell.

You may as well use a hotel.

TIMESHARES SHOULD CARRY A GOVERNMENT HEALTH WARNING

Avoid at all cost, do NOT get sucked in. You can get top class accomodation without going the Timeshare way, stick to a Travel Agent.
There is a possibilty of maybe picking a reasonably priced Timeshare up at the moment, but you have to ask why is this ? Maintenance Fees is the answer. These can cost up to and over a thousand quid a year. This is on top of whatever you have paid up front for a Timeshare. Still want one ?After all this outlay there is the cost of your flights to consider.
It's your call, but if you want to do it get expert advice ( can be hard as there are many sharks connected with Timeshare ) Look at as many Forums connected to Timeshare as you can. A very good one is Timeshare talkforums. You will find some horror stories on there. TCA Timeshare Consumer Association is another excellent site.

Best of all DO NOT DO IT. CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS TO YOUR FINANCES AND HEALTH.

Don't!! We have a week and buying it is one of the worst mistakes we have made! If you must, only get a resale, not a new one!

I've never had a timeshare but there's lots of discussion on here and other holiday websites.

If you search for 'club la costa' on here you'll get quite a few threads up. From what I've read CLC have been blacklisted by the Timeshare Council

There seems to be some discussion here:

I'd advise that whatever you do - make sure you research it fully and be 100% aware of what you're signing up for.

Why not just rent an nice apt for the weeks you want ?

It'll probably cost the same as it would for maintenance fees & you haven't signed up to anything or forked out a lot of money!

We have a timeshare in Tenerife and it is really nice. We bought resale and I would recommend that anyone else thinking of buying TS should only do resale. Don't be tempted into getting too many weeks. We only have 1 week and these days we often struggle to use that. In hindsight whilst we have enjoyed using it we probably wouldn't buy again. As has been said the upside is that, generally, the standard is very good and you are more sure of what you are getting than with bookinga na aprtment through, say Thomson. Prior to buying our TS we stayed in some pretty crappy dives that were advertised as 'lovely' apartments.
