I've no idea about the updates for SP1, OH just lets it do the updates as they come along, although the automatic update has now been turned off.
So, I've now run the AVG link above, but the icon is still on the desktop, is this right?
I've rerun CCleaner, and updated the registry.

Is it 'running' still? (Look in the taskbar bottom right. Is the icon still there?)
If its not running then sure ~ go for the updates:idea:0 -
Assuming avg has gone then you also need to replace it. AVIRA should be fine (I updated mine to SP2 with no ill effects)
Download AVIRA (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')

Yes, the icon is still in the taskbar also, I can click it and it opens.
I have tried the link above twice and it has downloaded it and run it and then the laptop has restarted, but it's still there
Is it worth me trying to go via the uninstall route on the Control Panel?Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -

It is not necessary to uninstall AVG to install the service pack. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

I agree ~ but the OP has had problems so im negating ALL possibles I can think of. AVG WAS installed with norton running which possibly means its not installed correctly
According to the OP some windows update simply completely failed and made a mess of things ~ im trying to go through it without a repeat happening:idea:0
