Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Hi, a little while ago, when I was having problems, I received lots of excellent advice from here.

I am posting from & about my OH's laptop.
It's running Vista and is a Toshiba.

A few days ago, following a Windows update, it suddenly seemed to switch itself off and when trying to turn it back on, it refused to boot...but the light on the CD drawer was lit.

I have convinced him to use Mozilla  and I'm now trying to find out the problem.

He has done a system restore and altered the update settings, but its still not right.

I've managed to download Malwarebytes & done a scan, I did a quick scan and have got the log, I then tried to do a full scan, but about 1.5 hours in, the laptop screen went blank and it refused to respond

I turned it off and then on and got it going again.
I've downloaded Hijackthis and done a system scan.

I will post the logs below and would appreciate any advice.

Thanks in advance.

Definitely the main problem is you have TWO 'on the fly' anti virus scanners running which are AVG and NORTON
So decide which one your going to remove (Id assume norton was on TRIAL and no longer updates so id guess that one)

Use the 32 bit AVG removal tool
    http://www.avg.com/download-tools

    or the Norton removal tool
    http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

then update malwarebytes and run a FULL scan this time

    Download CCLEANER
    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim
Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks)

reboot and assuming everythings ok ~

Turn off Spybots 'TEA TIMER' mode (using this when attempting to install a service pack is a BAD idea) ~
    Open Spybot
    Change Mode (Top) to ADVANCED
    Select TOOLS then RESIDENT
UNTICK 'Resident TEA TIMER' (Leave 'SD Helper' TICKED)

Goto WINDOWS UPDATE and download and install SERVICE PACK 2

You may even find you need to remove them BOTH first. Then reinstall as sometimes installing one with another already installed means it may never work properly

Me again.......I have tried to carry out the above instructions, all seemed to go well until I came to installing the Windows update.
The update shown on the computer was the office/works (?) one.
It loaded the main part, but then crashed part way through the update

Sooooo, should I un-install AVG, I have disposed of nasty Norton, but to be on the safe side....should AVG go.

My main worry is that I have tried to download the wrong windows Service Pack, what should it say?

    How could you do that?

    It should be Vista SP2.

    Just to clarify then ~
1 - youve turned OFF spybots tea timer?
2 - youve ONLY removed Norton?

If the above is correct then yes. Id use the AVG removal tool and run ccleaner again
You can only download and install SERVICE PACK 2 as you already have 1

    It was really easy ;)
I've just checked what is showing as available downloads.
It's showing Visa Service Pack 1
and further down the page (which is what I chose  ) is...2007 MicrosoftOffice Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2) :o

Yes, the above is correct. :D

I will dispose of AVG & run ccleaner again.

Sooooo, when I have done above, should I install SP1 updates and having done this, will SP2 appear as if by magic as an available download?

I've just checked what is showing as available downloads.
It's showing Visa Service Pack 1
and further down the page (which is what I chose  ) is...2007 MicrosoftOffice Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2) :o
