What company is it, highly unlikely he has not had anything after not paying a bill for 3 months. It is likely he has had at least 3 letters, attempted phone calls and a couple of site visits, are you sure your son is telling you everything?

absolutely certain; no letters at all either before or after the event.

OK, put it another way, have they admitted that they didn't send any correspondence? Have you asked?

They will have copies of any letters sent to your son.

Vestra, highly unlikely maybe, but true. Scottish & southern put the account on hold after the phone call from my son. he made the phone call upon receipt of the bill and they were told that he had lost his job, he had found another and had a delay between paydays. the account was put on hold. Cardew, no letters were issued and no calls made. there are no data entries on their computer systems other than the call made to them by my son; I asked!

Ok I work for this company and account would not be put on hold for 3 months. Maybe 7 days or something but not 3 months so it does sounds like it has gone through the normal collection procedure.

in normal situations you might be right, but obviously this is not a normal situation. in any event, normal collection procedures do not give automatic right of access and i would have thought that any responsible company would possess a standard procedure to write to confirm their intentions. i think it unfair to ask you to be involved in this, so i will get my son to apply for subject access under the data protection act. that will give us more information. Thank you so much for your input.

It is also surprising that they would discuss your son's account - losing job etc - with yourself.

Seems like they handled this matter badly.

Cardew, thanks again. I have an authority to deal with all of my son's accounts because he is either working nights or 14 hour days. Yes, I agree that they have handled this badly and their wall of silence concerns me. I've just been reading the Rights of Entry Act 1954 which is interesting - perhaps they feel that they are exempt from this?

Why didn't you arrange (or get your son to arrange) for the settlement of the "small unpaid debt"?
