Is it possible to get travel insurance cover for a 17 year old?

My daughter is off this year for her first holiday away with her mates...to Newquay!

Whilst we haven't become paranoid over recent events (this time last year she was going up a mountain in Borneo and that is/was a lot more stressful for Mum & Dad) we were aware that she didn't have any cover for the flight she is taking; and her belongings this year.

So, with the offering of trips for us later in the year to Paris and the continent, I started investigating multi-trip family travel insurance.

But wherever I turn to whatever policy none of them seem to allow a 17 year old to travel independently (an adult has to travel with them or be at the end of the trip to greet them).... unless you are an unmarried mother or father! (that's a hell of a way to get around this problem)

So has anyone found anything suitable in the way of cover for a 17 yr old travelling independently too and from Newquay without parental supervision or greeting?

This strikes me as another one of those issues where as a 17 yr old you can with permission get married, yet also with your parents permission cannot get suitable travel insurance for a trip you wish to make.

Is this a cause celeb for Martin I wonder?? [Increasing responsibility in the young adult population, and educate them more?]

yea, but she is going with you - adults - not by herself.

Its independent travel by the 17 year old.

Funnily thought I had cracked it with the Post Office... but the policy there was that they can travel independently but must be greeted by one of the adults on the policy :-(

Can you not take out a policy just for her?

Direct travel insurance cover children travelling on their own but they have to pay the adult rate, which isn't that bad. More details and link HERE , 3rd post down.

My 17 year old son went with some friends from his year at school to Nice last week. I bought travel insurance for him from the local Post Office, and it covered him as an independent traveller. Cost was £10 for 7 days.

    Hey thanks

Was this bought through Post Office at the counters or via the web?

Any reference/link you could provide would be very much appreciated!

    Hi JamPot,

I bought the insurance over the counter, after filling out the form. I checked the terms and conditions and they do not exclude cover for unaccompanied under 18s.

Right off to the Post Office now on the way home. Thanks a lot.
