Please let me know if this is successful - I thought our coppers had other metals in them.

Until about 1992 they were something like 95ish % copper I think, after that IIRC they were steel covered with a thin copper shell.

Flying holidays - hmmm...well thats what snails get. The slugs get a salt shower.....

:oerrrmm.....and yep I AM vegetarian...respect for other species etc...so I KNOW its inconsistent of me to treat our "beloved brethren" - otherwise known as slugs and snails that way. While I am confessing all my sins and hoping for absolution - I also pour boiling water over ants nests as well - whoops....obviously no hope for this sinner here then:o

......but I do pick up bits of litter that other "people" have left behind on some nice attractive piece of countryside "greenery". Does that mean I am forgiven and can enter the ranks of the "righteous";):D?

Lotus, do you think the slugs will mind if I use post 92 coins? Last night I started using a mix of 1p coins mostly from the 90's and so far my little Savoy seedlings are OK :T

I used another batch of 2p coins on the golden beetroot and they are also safe so far.

Tonight is very wet so will see tomorrow how efficient is QEII in helping me with the slimy's (I am sure Charles will approve).;)

I think we need to set up a video camera to see if it works - or pop a slug/snail INSIDE a circle of coins and watch...

Interesting, they say copper hasn't been used since 1860, yet this,
http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/bargains-and-rip-offs/article.html?in_article_id=409079&in_page_id=5 says that it was 97% copper up to 1992.
And there was a bigger challenge. Only coins made before 1992 have a high proportion of copper - 97 per cent by weight, with a small amount of zinc and tin. After that date, because of rising metal prices, the Royal Mint began to make the coins from steel with only a miserly coating of copper - no good to a scrap dealer.
Maybe they meant pure copper hasn't been used since 1860, not a bronze meld.

I don't know, my head tells me that a thin covering of copper will carry the same small charge that a thicker piece of copper will. So it should do the same job. Unless as in the web links the copper plating has worn off.

I suspect if a slug does a poo on top of the queens face you could be in trouble, as you could if you hammer a nail through the queens neck to fix it in place :D

I tried it last year and it didn't work, I put pennies all around my pots with no gaps (have big penny jar) and they just walked on over without harm either that or they are good at the long jump!

Put pennies in the other day and it seems to be working, which is good because I hate slug pellets. Must admit the hedgehogs are getting very tired of slug for tea and are hanging around the cats bowl looking up at the cupboard where I keep the food.
