On another note, I wanted to let you know about PETA's latest faux pas. The twitter infertility community is quite incensed, and I must say I agree with them.
National Infertility Awareness Week is a week coming up at the end of this month, organised in America by the infertility support organisation resolve.org. Last year, in support of this week I "came out" on FB with my IRL friends and posted links to blogs and videos each day for a week to highlight what people go through. The support I received was incredible. I ws contacted by so many friends that wanted to share their secret stories with me. I was contacted by so many that had no experience of infertility, but wanted to express their support and good wishes. People who I barely knew (you know what it can be like on FB if you let yourself get carried away) were contacting me for advice, and I was happy to offer the benefits of my experience.
Since then I have been very open about my IF everywhere I go, and I have made some new very good friendships based on happening to find out that we had shared experiences. National Infertility Awareness Week means a lot to me, and made a big change to my outlook, attitude and the amount of support I have received. I shall be raising awareness on my FB again for this year's event at the end of the month.
Now back to PETA. They are running a campaign to encourage spaying of pets to avoid unwanted pets that would lead miserable lives. Fair enough. They are running a 241 competition, so if you prove you have spayed your pet, you can be entered into a competition to win a free vasectomy. Right. Dubious, but each to their own. But what really bites from this campaign, is that they have clearly stated that they are doing this "in honour of National Infertility Awareness Week".
Disgusting.
An online infertility advocate has been in correspondence with PETA. They have responded by saying the world is overpopulated anyway, and why doesn't she just adopt. Read her letter on her blog here and PETA's response here.
I don't normally get all activist, but I think their campaign is in really bad taste, and their responses only serve to exacerbate the situation and prove their lack of caring and understanding about a community based on medical conditions.
If you feel the same, there's a petition you can sign here, and if you're happy to share the petition on your FBs and Twitters etc then please do.
There you go. That's my spiel, normal service can resume...Am not witty enough to put something cool and informative here:o
