How many people do you know that lost their job in the current climate

I know of 2 people living on my street who have been made redundant over the last 6 months. I work in retail and have lost count of the amount of business that have closed down/laying off staff.0

I work in the city, 5 close colleagues got made redundant, my brother did at xmas and a few of my uni friends on grad schemes at investmenet banks.
I think in and around London there are a lot more casualties of this recession.0 -
I'm REALLY surprised there are people who say they know of no-one having been made redundant. As am I surprised at the statistic I heard yesterday that 60% of people know of someone who has been made redundant. Whats surprising is that 40% DON'T know anyone.
TighterThanTwoCoatsOfPaint touched on it; but is this to do with how many people you actually know? I'm not suggesting this is a popularity competition by any means, but surely this is just a numbers game.
Admittedly, its a truly naff rule of thumb, but I have 330 Facebook 'friends'. I'm not saying thats a huge amount and I certainly don't consider them all friends; only probably regularly seeing a very small percentage, but thats 330 people that I do 'know' and out of all of those people, I know 6 have been made redundant as a direct result of the recession.
And they're just the ones I know about. For example, Mr P is counted in that 6, but he was out of work for less time than his notice period and I don't think he told many people about it, to all intents and purposes, he just changed jobs.
Another anomaly is the number of people like me who work as contractors, I've just had a major contract decimated, but I still have other work and while the contract was worth more than some friends' salaries, so it would be the equivalent of a redundancy for them, ask any of them the original question of the thread and they wouldn't count me in that number.0 -
Wheres the option for 0?
I am not aware of anyone who has lost their job in this current climate.:wall:
What we've got here is....... failure to communicate.
Some men you just can't reach.

Maybe it depends on the sector you work in? I'm getting to the point where I daren't contact people I haven't spoken to for a while in case they've been made redundant. In the voluntary sector they reckon 75% of organisations have had to make some kind of cuts. What I'm noticing is that most people who have been made redundant recently are finding work again, but usually at a lower salary.0

Quite possible, but what;s the point in a poll if you cannot record your option?
There's not even an option for 1 person, the minimum you need is "Me + 1":wall:

I don't know anyone who's been made redundant either. It's definitely business as usual around here, but we are in a back-water anyway. We never benefitted from the good years (run down seaside town) so it's hardly surprising that there's little sign of the downturn either. Our town's attraction has always been the cheap/tat shops and the sunday market (again cheap/tat), so if anything, it's probably busier than normal! We've not had any big employers for a decade or two, and unlike a lot of other areas, we don't have any public sector job creation either (no passport office, DVLA, tax offices, etc). Our biggest employers are a local university and the local infirmary - both public sector so business as normal there for the time being.0

i know about 5 who lost jobs, but they all got new ones relatively quickly and with their redundancy payments are actually better off!!!0

Of my group of mates, about half have been affected.
Maybe we're not indicative though as most of us are in London, in Finance/ IT or other services.0
