Use your 3 number while abroad with Vodafone Passport with 3 redirect

Options
If you are on 3 with an inclusive minutes deal then you can use those inclusive minutes to receive calls to you normal 3 number while abroad , where Vodafone Passport is valid.

Get yourself a Vodafone PAYG sim and register for Vodafone Passport.
Before you leave the UK divert ALL calls to your 3 number to the vodafone PAYG number and either switch off your 3 phone or switch from 3 sim to vodafone sim before leaving the UK.

When you are abroad, you can answer calls to your normal 3 number since they will be diverted to your new vodafone PAYG number - and the diverted calls come out of your inclusive 3 allowance and are free to receive on vodafone passport. As far as 3 are concerned they are diverting to a UK mobile number.

NB. DON'T whatever you do then switch on your 3 phone while abroad if you have done the above because then all diverted calls will be at 3's roaming rates.

NNB It might be better to leave the 3 sim at home

Would this work with other inclusive minute deals (o2 contract) or not? Just wondering why 3 is talked about and not others, are 3 doing a special promotion or something? :(

In theory it should work on any network that allows you to divert your voice calls to a UK Mobile.

Thanks, I might have to get a Vodafone sim and try it then.

I never knew that call forwarding came out of inclusive minutes generally, that's where the confusion came from. This could be a really good thing then. Or I could come back to a massive bill because I'm on contract, so think I'll have to keep the calls short either way!

Just ordered one, it says it needs a topup to activate. When it comes I'll try without topping up, but if it won't let me get incoming calls I'll stick a tenner on. Well I'll probably stick a tenner on anyway to avoid problems....

I use inclusive minute diverts to dump my mobile calls into my VOIP PBX. Works a charm.

This would only work while Voda have their current free passport offer on though.

All networks should forward calls from within their incoming minutes.

Even before the Vodafone offer, it was possible to forward certain networks to a global SIM with free incoming minutes in many countries; not all main networks include the Isle of Man or Jersey numbers though (at the moment O2 Orange and Virgin do).

True. Just checked the dates for that, it expires 3 weeks after I get back, luckily! :)

Oh cool :). The person that will be phoning me has unlimited o2 to o2 calls, as it's being forwarded would she still get these? Or will she be charged standard rates as it's being forwarded to Vodafone?

I'm hoping it's just me that will be charged (in terms of inclusive minutes) for the o2 to Vodafone part, and that she picks up the (free from her bolt on) o2 to o2 bit?

Zack she will pay her normal rate to your Voda. If you are by any chance going to Spain get an o2 PAYG sim and add their "my country Spain" add on for a fiver. Then neither of you will pay after that for calls as they are treated as o2 to o2 would be in the UK. Hope this helps.
