Personally, my phone is mainly for games, personalising and music (commute a lot around Greater London), and I find Sony ericssons fantastic for this - they often have better battery life. I would look for one you can put a memory card in, 1gb will be more than enough for a 9 year old, and there's a lot of things you can download for free (can also do this with some Nokias as well)

None damn you! 9yr olds should not have phones!!!!!!

However I would recommend the Nokai 6124! IKts only on vodafone and you shouldnt pay more than £55.

Trust me the 9yr will probably know how to use it in like 5 mins, and in an hour know more about phones than you do.

Something like a 6300? Typical nokia candy bar style, has a decent music player, games, can take a mini SD card.

I got one SIM free for £80 last summer, but have seen that theyre still about in most phone shops.
6300 is pretty much discontinued, nearest thing is a 6600 which is over £100 or a 5220 expressmusic (replacement for the 5310) which is about 60

micro sd cards which are the standard format for all manufacturers except sony ericsson are dirt cheap now as well, but stick to a proper make like sandisk or kingston, there is no excuse for cheap rubbish anymore
