"Settling down"...What is it?

would anyone care to share their interpretation of the phrase "settling down" when applied to such things as relationships/marriage etc and is there any particular age or age range at which this "settling down" thing is best practised?

Further once you have succumbed to "settling down",is it possible to unsettle yourself?

That's what they call a midlife crisis isn't it?
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...

Does it apply to either sex?

Most likely, I'm sure just as many women as men have affairs...

To me settling down means finishing my professional studies and getting to the point I want to be at work, getting a place to live with the OH, getting married, thinking of the future with the OH - kids, finances, life plans etc

I would describe settling down as when you either get engaged or buy a house or move in together with your first (or only) serious partner.
You would normally be talking late teens early 20s but I suppose could be up to 30, after that I dont think you really call it settling down, I think then its more 'about time' :rotfl:

My boyfriend and I were talking about this the other day actually. I was under the impression we were "settled down", we've been living together for over two years and are relatively happy most of the time.

Whereas he said he'd be ready to settle down in a couple of years, so he thinks settling down is getting married and having babies.
 Think happy & you'll be happy

When I married DH 22 years ago it felt more like I'd got someone special to see and do all these amazing things with rather than settling down. Before I married him I had to keep my nose to the grindstone to meet my bills and mortgage, if a job needed doing (mowing lawn, decorating, cooking) it was me that had to do it alone. So I felt that marriage if anything gave me more freedom.

Isn't settling down when you would rather stay in with a video or even just for an early night on a saturday than go out to the pub or town or partys?
I guess getting unsettled is the itchy feet that makes you want to go out and about again!!

And is it possible to live the life you want with the person you want without succumbing to 'settling down'?
Or is it possible to 'settle down' alone?
