Sorry for the mega bumpage :o

Just got my younger sons report, and it is fab!

He is in preschool which is attached to a school and the amount of effort that has been put in is great. They have put a photo to match every comment and is very personal to him and will be a lovely keepsake, its a good 11 pages long.

    What a fab teacher! :T:T

Blimey, things HAVE changed. My school reports were hand-written and my mum, a teacher of infants for 30 years used to shut herself in the kitchen for several evenings to write hers - woe betide you if you disturbed her!!

Have you read the thread at all?

I don't think things have changed that much from your description. I had to cook, clean and generally take care of the house for two weeks because my gf was doing her reports for several hours each evening...All that's changed is that teachers are now expected to provide much more structured, detailed reports - the size of which often makes writing each one entirely from scratch prohibitive.

Totally jumping on this thread but I have to say this - you had to do what???? I can't believe it! hehe sorry!

And to all those idiots who think teachers have an easy ride, you really don't know what you are talking about! They work through the holidays, and I don't know one that starts at 9 leaves at 3.30. Think of all the lesson planning, marking, ridiculous paperwork that the government dictates be completed. It's a hard job (as are many of ours I hasten to add but people just accept that if we say it?). I get very annoyed with people who think the teachers just rock up to educate their little darlings, then p!ss off down the pub at 3.30 and jetset in the school holidays. Not on what they earn!

My son bought home a slip of paper with his teacher assesed attainment scores (he's year 9, so no SATS).

The problem is, 5 of the subject listed (some of which he's got lever 3 attainment :( ) are subject he no longer studies, and subject he does study aren't on the list at all - and today is the last day of term, so how do I get that sorted?
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

I think it's laughable that so many teachers complain about the job. Did you not think about that before you chose your career?
Every job has it's issues and stresses, but if a waitress were to start whinging about how hard she works, her sore feet at the end of the night, the idiots she has to deal with and the low would everyone jump to defend her or would they say 'well you chose to do that job?'

As a parent I expect my childs teacher to at least get the gender correct in a report.

We aren't complaining about the job - most of us LOVE our jobs. We are responding to idiots who constantly tell us how 'easy' our jobs are - setting the record straight you might say? Would you not respond if a large section of the people you met constantly harped on about how you're underworked and overpaid, when you know the opposite is true?

This must be intensely annoying for you. I REALLY don't like the way some schools hand out reports on the last day of term. It means some parents inevitably have questions they can't get answers to until the next term. Is it possible your son has been given the wrong report? It sounds so different in terms of subjects etc. Are the subjects he no longer studies, subjects he only dropped this academic year - or has he not studied them since last year or earlier? Were you expecting such low grades, or are they a complete shock? I am inclined to think there's been a mix up - does your son have a common name?

I'd just like to say that the teachers my children have had have all been exceptionally good apart from two - one of these was an exchange from Australia. So that means 16 for their primary years alone so far. I regularly give treats into the staff room and go about the neighbourhood praising our school to the high heavens.

Our youngest DD's are twins and are in the same class (our choice). They are of similar level academically and socially so got broadly the same report. The last comment on each was 'Xxx has been a pleasure to have in class and I will miss being her teacher next year'.

The parents don't generally discuss reports but I did have a little smile to myself when my friend told me the really nice comment her DD had had from the same teacher!

It really doesn't matter that reports have the same words, but they should be correct. If these errors had happened to us we would be asking to speak to the teacher asap. It does not reflect on the school well and I would have to think carefully about whether that school is the best place for my child.

So I'll just say a heartfelt thank you to all the teachers who spend so much time and effort with our children across the land, and to those at our school particularly.

Frankly I think the teachers are looking for an easy life, when they finish at 3.30 p.m why aren't they preparing for the next days lessons? No, they are shooting off home, (seen) 9 o'clock start and 3.30 finish sounds like an easy life to me. Telling the children to "have a go" before asking for help (looking for an easy life again) if the child don't not understand then ask for help, yes? What is the teacher doing when the children are all having a go, easy life?
