I've just recieved DD's end of year report - it is typed but certainly no cutting and pasting going on with this primary teacher's reception class of 30
She has written
X is a bright little girl and generally works very hard at school. She can be smiley but also can be very temperamental and moody at times. X is very strong willed and this can cause arguements with other like minded children - she is often involved in arguements with other children because they will not do things her way which she finds difficult to deal withthat's my daughter right enough
I am amazed she has written such a detailed page report on a 5 year old (she's written loads of positive stuff too)
I am impressed with her level of understanding - she has gone in quite some detail which I didn't expect :cool:0 -

Wish we had teachers like yours in our school, your lucky! So it can be done then, hats off to her, I hope you praised her in the return slip.:T0 -
smeged, perhaps you should ask to shadow a teacher for a few days, to see how much work they really do?
A teacher will often suggest that a child tries something on their own before getting extra help because, in the majority of cases, the child will find that they can work it out independently. This is of much greater benefit to the child than being spoonfed.
Whilst children are getting on with work, teachers are either helping those that do need extra help, dealing with those that are playing up, or preparing the next thing in the lesson.Gone ... or have I?0 -
Didn't answer my questions millibear00001, what are they doing when all the children are "having a go", they should stay in school until 5.00 to prepare for the next day, if not why not?
They are helping the children who already 'had a go' instead of giving up at the first difficulty. They often are in school until 5, or later, often in school from 7am, often working at home until bedtime. Now answer my question. If it's such an easy life, how come you're not doing it?0 -
Im a triplet and this happened a lot. so much so my mum would only read one of our reports as they said exactly the same things all thru primary school. mum didnt really mind as she knew we were doing well. this was back in the days when a teacher had 35 pupils in a class and no teachin assistant (late 80s/early 90s!)
This only changed when we had different teachers at secondary school and took different subjects. i guess most parents never realise that the report wasnt specifically written for them!!
I have 35 in my class, and no teaching assistant (2009).0 -
My parents and I always knew word for word what my report would say - I was always well-behaved and hard working. There are only so many ways to say it!
I can't see the problem with copy and paste. Unless there's problems that need to be addressed why should it worry anyone?0 -
I must admit I have also come across some "sloppy" copy and pasting of reports from teachers. My son was referred to as "she" on one report and also referred to by the wrong name as a previous poster has commentated. I do feel that many teachers reports are "shoddy" and it would be a very low standard of work if it was in the "real" workplace. How many employees have to type standard letters every day and just change the names and address of customers...........very common practice I would think. My employer would have me on a diciplinary if I made smple errors like this. Come on teachers get a grip, after all teachers are supposed to be "educated" aren't they?0

My DD first school report (2000) was handwritten and just a paragraph about how she was doing generally.
The following year they started using report writing software because they now had to provide a report covering every subject. Such a waste of time and of course bits were cut and paste because they had to say what they had been studing and how the pupil was doing in that subject. This was then replaced with a new style report which grouped together subjects and I thought was much better. Some parents though did complain they were factually incorrect with mention of how they enjoyed the school trip that they hadn't been on, contributed to school orchestra, when they didn't play an instrument etc.
DD most personal report was in Y5. The teacher who had disliked DD from day one and called her by the wrong name nearly all year despite me raising it with him (and boy did he get defensive but he had even written the wrong name on her target sheet at parents evening) thought he would be clever and make critical snide remarks. He had told DD he was going to put in her report that she was irritating, and he had.
I was furious but spoke to my neighbour who is a retired teacher. She was horrified and wrote me out point by point where he had been critical and petty (and had incorrect grammar). The report was factually incorrect, he said she didn't know any geography outside our local area, didn't know what the equator was etc. when we knew she did. I spoke to Headteacher who on full reading was not happy either and apologised as he knew DD well and knowing the child she was he had barely paid any attention to what the teacher wrote about her in each subject as he knew she should have no issues. He asked us to speak to the teacher about it at parents evening and then come and see him.
I took OH with me to parents evening as I knew I would get upset. OH used to interviewing people and held teacher to account on every critical statement he had made. He asked him what he based his comment on and he said they were from tests they had done in class so OH asked to see them. We had to wait a few days to see and she had 99% in the blooming tests and on the question of the equator she had answered correctly.
So I'm not too bothered about stock phrases and copy and pasting in reports providing they reflect with some accuracy what my child is doing and I can recognise my child in the report.
DD in Y9 now and school reports and 1 side A4 for each subject. Half the page is about what they are studing that year and the other half about her performance with a grade (A-C) for behaviour/attiude and effort. Some teachers are more personal that others in their comments and I can always tell if they mention that if they say she is too quiet as this is one constant thing with DD that she won't speak up in class until she feels very comfortable with not only the teacher but the class she is with.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Having taught for 17 years (but not anymore ! ) I still find myself in the position of having to defend hard working teachers. I want to thank you for giving me such a short answer which I will now use in my next confrontation with people about teachers and the good life they have !
ie If its such an easy life, how come you`re not doing it ? Why did I not think of that ?:T0 -
The reason why I couldn't do it is because I am far to honest, hot headed and have morals, because there has been only one teacher so far in this school who hasn't shown favouritism, there is special boy and girl in the class, the boys parents give money to the school so he gets all the opportunities and the girl is a child of a teacher. Obviously the teachers have been told to give these children the opportunities and it shows. I have morals so would refuse and get the sack.0
