Bread flour is similar to plain flour so it really wont ruin your crumble. It might taste a little different (perhaps thicker or something). The difference with plain and bread flour is gluten, or protein I think?
Self-raising I think would be your bigger worry, but again I still think it would end up tasty.0 -
If it is plain flour you would need to add baking powder before making crumble as it's usually made with SR flour.
You could try making pastry with it. I use plain flour for pastry but my grandmother used SR.0 -
Right gonna give it a go .... will report back as to what it was like.
Although I fear with the gannets I live with it'll get eaten so quickly flavour won't come in to it :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:Banana LoversBuy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning0 -

I've never made crumble with SR flour, only used plain (no baking powder) and it always comes out lovely
I think using bread flour for a crumble would probably make it more heavy and dense? Thanks to everyone who posts comps, I love winning prizes big and small

I use plain flour for crumble too.
I don't see why using bread flour for crumble would make a difference because crumble mix doesn't contain water or yeast. Gluten + water makes the dough stretchy and this captures the CO2 produced by the yeast, and makes the bread rise. This just won't happen with crumble mix and it's why it doesn't need baking powder/to be SR flour either. No water, no CO2, no rising.Val.0 -
