Heres what the BT Retail Chief Operating Office had to say about deal.
"The broadband market in the UK is the most competitive in the world and this offer from Carphone is yet one more offer in what is already a crowded market," BT Retail consumer division COO John Petter said.
"As for this being 'free' broadband, it is only 'free' if you pay them hundreds of pounds a year for other services. We'd advise people to take a careful look at the small print as there are plenty of extra costs." ®0 -
Interesting quote considering I already pay BT 'hundreds of pounds a year' for my landline.
I suppose they'll offer me free broadband in a day or two then ...........Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

I think this may become another screaming.net. They have definately got the knives out for people who use p2p, From their 'fair use' policy:
"If you only occasionally have very high usage, we're unlikely to be concerned unless it becomes a regular occurrence. If this does happen then we'll get in touch to help you find ways to reduce your usage.
Ultimately, if your usage still remains excessive despite our attempts to help you reduce it, we may restrict your general Internet service throughout the entire day. A last resort will be to suspend your service and possibly close your account.
We don't stop our customers using file-sharing software (often known as peer-to-peer or P2P), but we keep an eye out for anyone abusing the rules. We will work to restrict P2P users who slow down the network for everyone else (see below). And we certainly don't condone using P2P software to illegally share copyrighted music, or to breach any other local law or regulation.
To stop selfish downloaders hogging bandwidth and slowing things down for everyone else we have a fair use policy. We won't bother you if it only happens occasionally, but if you regularly download excessive amounts using P2P we will get in touch. If you can't change your ways, we may restrict your P2P usage throughout the day. And if all else fails, as a last resort we may suspend your service and possibly close your account."
OOOH 'selfish' downloaders eh!?!? There are legitimate high uses of p2p. So if I use my 8Meg broadband connection for what it is intended by downloading movie trailers, streaming online radio/video, gaming, or linux distros I'm selfish !?!? Translate 'slow down the network for everyone else' into: "We can't afford at our prices to invest in enough bandwidth to cope with anyone but light users" The price may be cheap but don't be fooled. I also see theres a £25 connection charge, and that they bar you from making calls via other telcos eg 18866 etc if you are connected via their LLU. The free inclusive calls only last for up to 70 mins. You will have to pay them £1.50 a month for caller display while it is free via BT (privacy at home option)0
