Free Broadband with TalkTalk

Just looked at the new Talktalk website http://www.talktalk.co.uk/talktalk/servlet/gben-home-Home

I'm with TalkTalk for landline and broadband but I can't get it in my area apparently  Just my luck!

  • Yeah, I got excited when I looked at it. Its to do with the 'unbundled' exchanges, but unfortunately I am currently living near a bundled exchange. I can only get 1mb broadband, two or three years ago this would have been ace but these days I have friends with 8MB and 20MB not paying much more than me.

Free? It costs £21 per month for the phone package. Now I pay NThell £9.99 for my broadband and use Talk Talk as my phone carrier. I use 18185 (thanks Heinz) for my calls. Don't think I will be switching to "Free" broadband with TT, thanks.

You also have to sign an 18 month contract!!! Thats a long time in the fast moving world of Telecoms.

Because BT still controls your telephone exchange and we have to connect you through their equipment, we can't offer you broadband for free. However, we can offer you high-speed broadband at the great price of just £10 per month, when you sign up to our Talk3 international calling plan.

I'm paying 14.99 a month for my TalkTalk Broadband and I'm on their free evenings and weekend package costing me £3.40 a month. Total of £18.39. (Also got my line rental with them).

I suppose if I went on the international calling plan for
£9.99 a month and took the new broadband at £10.00 a month I would in fact be paying just 1.60 extra for unlimited calls.

Does this make any sense or am I missing something?

What about your line rental of £11 a month you must take with them.

My calculations are you would pay.
£11 line rental +£1.75 with caller display+9.99p for the call package.plus £10 for the broadband .So thats £32.74p a month.(With 18 month contract i assume).

With BT you pay £11 a month. Use 1899 for peak. Use Primus Saver 2 for completely free E&W calls. £14.99p plus £11 =£25.99p a month.£81 a year cheaper then TTpackage .Thats 2700 01/2 calls on 1899!!!!

    The full details are:
    • £29.99 connection fee
    • standard line rental of £11.00 per month
    • all calls package of £9.99 per month
    • 18 month contract
    • 40 gigabit monthly download limit
    • prefix of 18418 required to make unlimited international calls to 28 countries
    • premium of £9.99 per month is payable for customers residing outside the footprint of the 1,000 exchanges to be unbundled
    • up to 8 Mbps broadband access
  • Thanks marc I'd forgotten the connection fee, at the moment I am paying line rental 11.00,3.40 for free evening and weekend calls, plus 14.99 broadband all with TalkTalk total of 29.39 the lot instead of 30.99 for the new deal. Plus of course the 29.99 connection fee.

I've just read this on the TalkTalk site:

    Connection fee
Sadly we do have to charge you a one-off connection fee of £29.99. This is a contribution to the cost of transfering your line from BT to TalkTalk.

My line is already with TalkTalk so how does that work?

    I got that too.

The cynic in me took over though when I saw the below text alongside:

    Talk3 Call plan
    Line rental
Up to 8Meg broadband for only £10

I may just be me but, as that's the only mention of cost on that page, I'm sure the unwary will assume that £10 is the total cost for those 3 items (it's not, it's £9.99 for the first, £11 for the second and £10 for the third).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Because of my inability to get an internet connection via e7even, I phoned talktalk who provide my calls, to seek info. If I want to get broadband with them, I should get my mac code from current isp, and change my phone tarif to option 3 at £9.99 per month, that will give me free broadband, free national calls, free international calls to 27 countries. That sees fairly straightforward to me. So, is someone suggesting that information is not so ?.

I notice that weekend landline calls are no longer 'free' on Talk 1. Obviously 'free weekend calls for life' was a lie. As ever with this lot the 'small print' contains a number of nasty pitfalls!
