My friend who lives nex door to me is linked to broadband through TalkTalk like myself. Whereas I am getting speeds around 4300kbps he is only getting 267kbps. We have run CCleaner and Avira to see if this helped, it did'nt.
Can anyone offer any tips on what we shoild be looking for in an effort to improve his speed.

Assuming he has a similar setup to you (e.g. both on ADSL, wired internal network, similar modem), and that you're using the same external BB speed tester, it's most probable that the cause is between his ADSL modem and the Internet itself. While it's possible that the cause is within his PC, it's unlikely - broadband data rates are not at all challenging for a modern PC. It's true that there are some tweaks (e.g. MTU size) that can affect throughput, but if neither of you has been "tweaking", that's not likely to be the cause.
Although next door, it's possible that the quality of his line to the exchange is poorer than yours - more noisy or lossy or both. It's also possible that his modem is not synchronising with the modem in the exchange as well as yours. And then it's possible that he is contending with a different group of people than you are, and he happens to be in with some heavy 24/7 file sharers, while you're grouped with (e.g.) mainly silver surfers.
I'd get him to call the TalkTalk Helpdesk and explain the situation. They will probably try to fob him off initially, but it should at least be possible for them to test to make sure that the equipment in the exchange is not faulty.0 -
Two quick things that your neighbour can do.
First, connect his modem to the master test socket, and retest speed.
If their is an improvement the problem lies with his internal phone wiring.
Like this:-
Second, Log onto his router and check the router statistics, this will give an indication of the attenuation/noise on the line and the speed the modem is synchronising with the exchange. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Developed a problem with my Madasafish broadband over the last few days. I have an 8MB line and usually get a download speed between 2 and 5MB and an upload of 0.3MB.
For the last few days I am getting a consistent download speed of 0.13MB:mad: yet the uplaod speed is still around the 0.3MB.
Have contacted BT and MAAF and one of their suggestions was to plug my router directly into the master test socket.
Have just tried to do that now. We have two sockets in the lounge and bedroom but when I took the front plate off no sign of a test socket they just appear to be normal extension sockets.
Any ideas please?

The master will be the first socket after the telephone cable enters the property. If it is a very old installation you may not have one of the types shown above.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0

not sure about that, worth changing out the ADSL splitters , or unpluggin them all apart from the one on the modem as its not unknown for the splitters to go faultyEx forum ambassador

Thanks my fellow taff. I think they must be old installations as they are both seperately wired direct to the BT socket outside the house.0 -
If I understand you correctly, that would mean that they are both master sockets: i.e not extensions from another socket.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0

Is the neighbours routers security switched on? if not anyone could be using it wirelessly:idea:0

Things to try (had a similar problem myself)...
1. use the master socket (as mentioned earlier).
2. unplug all phone connections bar the internet connection - try different filters as well.
3. check wireless security (as aliEnRIK wisely stated).
4. ensure router has latest firmware.
5. try your router to see if it works better.
6. use the BT line checker to see if there is a problem on the line. Log on to BT website, log-on to your account, then select Fault and the line checker.
7. ask ISP to order a line check from BT.0
