The Alt-F10 to restore thing is a big feature of Acers, but if the hidden partition that it is recovering from is pooped then you are scuppered.

Oh dear. Does this mean I have no other option but to pay out the £48.88 for a new set of discs?

Sorry to sound so clueless..........thats because I am really, but thank you all for being so helpful not to mention patient.

Then if you take it in today they have to fix it under warranty-the recovery disks are their problem not yours. But why pay £8 a month (£96) for a warranty that you get with it anyway?-you're just duplicating the cover.
The manuals suggests that you create the recovery disk yourself as soon as you get it-after it goes wrong is too late...

Very valid point re the warranty. Something I am sure I am not alone with either. Those PC World salesmen are good and I am feeling rather stupid about being so gullible. That lesson is learnt! So,now that the 13th July has passed, time to test the warranty! Wish me luck. Oh and thanks again for taking the trouble to offer help. Much appreciated.
