Hello you lovely helpful people.
My son's Acer Aspire 5315 has had a lot of problems. We have been advised to "wipe the machine clean" and reload using recovery discs.
Unfortuantely we don't have the recovery discs as we somewhat stupidly did not make them....ooops Acer have quoted an eyewatering £48.88 for another set.
Does anyone know if its possible to get them for a better price or would it still be possible to retrieve them from the computer somehow?
I am sure you have already concuded I am no computer genius so your help would be VERY much appreciated.
Thank you!
Carole

(The system was supposed to have a separate recovery partition to boot from, wasn't it?)
You may be able to download a copy of them from a bittorrent site, but basically this is why buying Acer is a false economy.
Alternatively, you could try taking the machine back to the shop and telling them it's not fit for purpose.0 -
Acer should have sent a set of recovery disks with the laptop originally. £48.88 is a joke. All they're doing is burning a couple of disks from a pre-set image they've got.
Cost?
Disk = 10p * 3
Labour = £10 -
is this Vista or XP ?
any Xp or Vista CD will allow you to do a repair
the Vista recovery disc is here for free

Im so sorry to be so daft but do I download this with my working machine onto disc and then run it on the Acer or does it have to be done with the Acer? I have attempted to save it to disc but its not liking it. Probably me being silly but help/advice would be gratefully received

*UPDATE*
Trawled a few web sites and discovered that if I pressed alt+F10 I would be able to restore
Sadly it doesn't seem able to do this and has stopped at 3%. The message I have received is the following:
Source DEE0A531.007
Destination \Harddisk0\Partition2
Speed 152MB/Min
Elapsed Time 00:01:58 Time Left 00:49:16
Current Progress 3%
It seems to get stuck. Very poorly machine me thinks. It then says
Restore Failed - reason 0xd000001e
Click Ok to restart the computer.
Thanks again for help and advice.0 -
We might be able to advise better if you'd tell us what is wrong with the laptop, i.e. what error messages you are you getting.
Not easy to make a diagnosis based on 'lots of problems' and 'very poorly'.
9 times out of 10 a reinstall/factory restore is suggested as an easy way out when it's not really necessary.
Most laptops will have the OS copied onto a hidden backup partition to restore from, have you looked in the manual to see if ths is the case with yours? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
if you go to the programme menu then acer empowering technology >acer e recovery management from here you will be able to restore everything to the factory settings , this will however wipe everything you have put on the laptop off the hard drive so back any docs or music etc up before you do this if possible0

When I turn on the computer I get the followig mesage:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause To fix the problem:
1 Insert your windows installation disc and restart you computer
2 Choose your language settings and click "Next"
3 Click "Repair your computer"
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for asistance,
File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data
Then, if I press enter the white acer screen appears for a second or two and the same message repeats
So, I guess what I am asking is how do I get hold of the windows installation disc for a lesser price than £48.88 which Acer are quoting? Would the backup discs still be somewhere on the computer? I'm certain we didn't receive any when we purchased the computer.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time and trouble to read these posts and offer help. I really appreciate everything.0 -
if the restore patition is corrupt then I suspect the the Hard disk may be on the way out ?? (restore partition is normally but uses the same hard drive as your C )Ex forum ambassador
