What it doesn't do: You cannot use the Windows Vista Recovery Disc to re-install Windows - it only fixes (not replaces!) Windows.
Why you need it: If you bought your PC from a major retailer, you didn't get this CD with your hefty purchase.

    Download Links

Windows Vista Recovery Disc 32-Bit (x86) Edition

    Instructions
    1. Download the appropriate .torrent file from above that corresponds to the version of Windows Vista you have installed.
    2. Download and run µTorrent.
    3. Open the .torrent file you downloaded with µTorrent. (File -> Add Torrent)
    4. Select where you want µTorrent to save the Vista Recovery Disc.
    5. Wait for it to download.
    6. Burn the .iso file that µTorrent downloaded to a CD using these instructions.
    7. When you want to use the recovery center, put the CD in your drive and boot from it. This is usually done by pressing F8 at startup, or changing the boot drive order in the BIOS.

If it's under a year old, your first port of call should be the retailer, to get it fixed under warranty. Now please don't tell us you bought it at PC World?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

A standard set of media won't have the Acer drivers and recovery gunk.

    *UPDATE*

Trawled a few web sites and discovered that if I pressed alt+F10 I would be able to restore

Sadly it doesn't seem able to do this and has stopped at 3%. The message I have received is the following:

    Source DEE0A531.007
    Destination \Harddisk0\Partition2
    Speed 152MB/Min
Elapsed Time 00:01:58 Time Left 00:49:16
    Current Progress 3%

It seems to get stuck. Very poorly machine me thinks. It then says

    Restore Failed - reason 0xd000001e
Click Ok to restart the computer.

Thanks again for help and advice.
The Alt-F10 to restore thing is a big feature of Acers, but if the hidden partition that it is recovering from is pooped then you are scuppered.

    Hi,

I have Acer Aspire 5735Z - Under start menu there is an option for eRecovery management. Then it give me number options e.g. Backup factory defaults to CD/DVD, backup drivers and applications to CD/DVD etc.

Backup factory defaults to CD/DVD creates recovery disk.

Erm yes....I'm worried now, is that really bad? Its exactly one year old TODAY but I purchased the PC world cover for £7.99 per month. I can hear you groaning from here. I have boobed big style haven't I? Thing is they say I need to buy a set of recovery discs for £48.88 before they can fix it. What a mess!!!!

    StarM,

Thank you for taking the trouble to reply. Unfortuantely I can't get the start menu. I just get messages about the machine needing back up discs.
