It would be an awfully good idea to have child-free class on the AC though. :) Like a 'quiet zone'. :)

When I have travelled long haul (for work) I sometimes noticed the names of people I knew being called out. They were all professors at our university. They were all upgraded. Having a fancy title, not just plain Mr/Mrs/Ms/Miss, seems to be helpful ... at least with Air New Zealand.

Im off to Abu Dhabi on Tuesday flying with Qatar, and apparently the flight is quite full.

The forlorn hope of an upgrade aside (Have you read Martins useful guide to getting an upgrade from the times of Moses? :p), I am going to lighten your mood by saying that the start of the English hollibobs aside, I would be really suprised if any UK to Abu Dhabi flight was anywhere near busy July/August. :)

The following photo was taken inflight last week on a KLM flight from Schiphol to Abu Dhabi and various other first hand reports suggest low numbers on all UK to AD flights. :)

Try doing a flight search on your your departure dates and see what prices are like..... If prices are low, then that's a fair indicator that flights are not busy. ;)

last week you could fly UK to AD regional departure at 7 days notice sub £300 ;)

I'm going to apologise and burst your bubble in this instance! I flew back on Etihad yesterday from Abu Dhabi, flight was packed, I counted 2 spare seats, on the way out about 4.

Basically the Middle Eastern Airlines are full not with people going to Abu Dhabi, Dubai etc, but with people connecting through to Asia, Oz etc, where the weather is better.

If, like TR you had a flight booked on a European airline to Abu Dhabi (i.e. with KLM or BA) that doesn't have onward connections (unlike Qatar, Etihad etc) the flight would probably be empty. But as you are flying with Qatar, the flight will probably be full. But you won't get an upgrade anyway, so enjoy Qatar airlines.

Was 40 degrees in Abu Dhabi, take plenty of sunscreen!

I must say, if I could get an upgrade for just a thousand pounds, I would bite their hands off!
