She is elderly and infirm and lives alone. All she needed was a phone. Where I live our pharmacy does doorstep deliveries for the housebound, so I'm sure that where there's a way round this.

Her symptoms were exactly the same as the other person I said about earlier who had it. The flu itself is mild, but she has a tummy bug with it.

Edited to add: sorry Stevie, just read this back and my reply sounds a bit curt, wasn't meant to be, just meant that the symptoms were the same - mild flu, but with a tummy bug.

Not being nitpicky.. but Welshmaiden that's not 100% right :) They didn't have antibiotics in 1918 no, but they did have many more infectious diseases and epidemics to content with, so they had well-perfected routines & rules for nursing patients. They had hospitals which were well-aired and well-scrubbed unlike today's ! However on the whole we're a lot better off in other ways.

Anyone going into hospital should know there's a 1 in 300 chance of death due to medical blundering and bungling.

and what about people who are unemplyed and live on their own and dont have friends or family, or are alone and elderly? who does this for them?

I think its a good point in unfriendly communities.

FWIW Our vry small parish chair saw me this morning and asked if I had a flu buddy, I said no, but had presumed I'd call my neighbour (him). He told me their is an informal volunteers panel, and I have put my name on it. Apparntly, so has pretty much every other household in the village, which is really wonderful. Its sad not all parishes are so small/friendly.

It's harder on your lungs apparently, so you may feel like you have a chest infection (agony when you cough). Most people died of pneumonia (viral) in the 1919 flu pandemic, which is still untreatable.

"Expectant mothers and parents with children under five are being advised to avoid crowds and unnecessary travel.

And the National Childbirth Trust has been accused of "scaremongering" for suggesting women delay pregnancy whilst the pandemic is going on."

I certainly wouldn't get on a plane now! Bit by bit, the authorities are priming us for the reality of 100,000 plus additional deaths...

When I had swine flu about 6 weeks ago, I didn't know I had because the Government were keeping secret what the symptoms were back then. They simply said 'flu symptoms' without elaborating. It never crossed my mind I had it, so I happily went to my doctor, and a walk-in clinic. I reckon loads of people have already had it due to the fact no one knew what to look for. It is only the last week or two they have been advising the public what to look out for.
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?
