tesco overcharging

  • I always check my bills now before I leave the store, especially as they often change the offer before the end date as recently happened with the Amore/Mullerlight yogurts. When I bought them the SEL said 4 for £1, but I was charged full price for 4 of the 12 I bought and didn't notice til I got home. I went back several days later but the offer had changed to "buy 8 for £2". I did get back my overcharge but not DTD, and I didn't think I was strong enough to argue the toss since I had no proof.

To be clear, it was obvious that there was an entitlement for ONE case of beer at £5 for every customer who spent £30 or over.

There was no implication at all that it was ONE case of beer at £5 for every £30 that each customer spent. That is why I say that the OP was trying it on, not trying to get double the difference back which was just way beyond the pale.

What I did was completely different. I spent over £30 and got some cheap beer. My wife spent £30 and got some cheap beer.

I didn't go through the till twice, and I didn't argue with them about what "spend £30 and get some cheap beer" meant, because it was pretty obvious to me. And that is why my wife and I both spent over £30.

As we are different individuals there was no way that we were "trying it on". We were simply complying with the terms of the offer.

There is always a difference between moneysaving - getting the best value out of a deal that is offered - and simply deliberately misunderstanding a deal and then being stroppy that you don't get your own way.

I would still like to know why MarkyMarkD says it was OBVIOUS only one per customer. The sign I read said SPEND £30 and get Carlsberg for £5. Now would I be cynical to think Tesco didn't put the simple words "one per customer" because they wanted people to buy more than one case and pay the full amount.

Hmm - well, how many people have shared this confusion about what is IMHO a pretty obvious offer?

It is easy to word it the other way - "get a case of beer for £5 with every £30 of shopping" would do the job. And equally easy to word it the correct way "spend £30 and get a case of beer for £5", which obviously (to most people) means that you get ONE case if you spend £30 OR MORE, not that you can get x cases of beer for spending £30 times x.

On the signs it did say "Offer limited to one case per customer" in the conditions under the main '£5 when you spend £30 text'.
  • Tesco do not seem to want to give double the difference any more. I was overcharged on an item (came up at £3 instead of £1) and the woman didn't do double the difference. She said it was a technical error at the till so not their fault. I said I was still overcharged. In the end she gave my DTD but very grudgingly.
I was overcharged again on a Tesco finest dine in for £9 meal deal and they did not give me DTD on that.

send copy of ur reciept to h/o and explain what happened, clearly they were trying it on, the blue board behind them clearly states it d n d.

Further, i was told by Tesco C/S manager the cases of carlsberg were spend thirty get as many as u like (within reason) for 5, then told at the till is one per 30 - so even t's dont know whats goin on, no suprise here i feel xx

  • I've had problems with Tesco refunding double the difference. I bought a DVD with a £7 sticker on it and when I got home I saw I'd been charged over £14. I went to my local Tesco (not an express) and they told me as I'd bought it from another Tesco and I'm wanting a refund of the excess money they'd charged, I'd have to go back to the one that I'd bought it from. The lovely lady told me about the Double the Difference (which I wasn't aware of) and warned me that they'd try anything not to pay it.

Back to the Tesco Extra I went and the customer supervisor told me that as mine was the only DVD with the £7 sticker on (all the others on the DVDs had been taken off) she would refund me the money. I enquired about the DTD as she said I wasn't allowed it as they are refunding me out of the goodness of Tesco's as someone could have swapped stickers on the DVD to get it cheaper. I politely asked if she was accusing me of this, despite the sticker being pristine on the box and she said no, but it was a 'different kind of overcharge'. I then told her that the lady in the other store had said about staff not wanting to give DTD as it comes out of the store's wastage and her face fell and she went off to see a manager, grumbing that the other Tesco assistant shouldn't have said that. Low and behold she came back from seeing the manager and gave me the DTD refund.

I've worked (and still do work in) the customer services sector and if a company has a certain policy, they should stick to it - it just winds me up.

on the end of an aisle was a sign "3 for £3 Uncle Bens Express". Loads of flavours on the end of aisle display. Bought 3 egg fried rice, checked till receipt when got home and was charged £3.75. Six days later went back, same sign, same display. After long queue at CS desk was told "that only applies to plain flavour", grudgingly went to check sign. Assistant bumped into duty manager and asked him, he said that the night staff had put the wrong flavour by the sign. Surely the sign itself should have specified that it only applied to certain flavours - since you would be mislead anyway? I got dtd without asking (1.50) which was nice of the girl but I feel that Tescos are guilty of sharp practice at the very least. How many other people were mislead by this display and didn't check their receipt - or thought they had been mistaken as it was 3 for 3.75? I am very suspicious of tesco motives, and fully expect nothing to have changed on my next visit.

In our Tesco's they also have the Uncle Bens sauces on the same end, but these are not 3 for £3, they are 2 for £3. Funnily enough the sign for this one is far smaller - can't help but think they want to trip people up with that one, it nearly fooled me and I am a seasoned money saver!
