Oh and of course, there are no guarantees that it will stay at £35 a year.
    I think it's falling to £30 next year :D

    ... Or £20 for those cars in band B (101-110g/km CO2)

that low £35 is an eye catcher if when you come to sell second-hand - so improves resale value a bit

agreed, same goes for the 2001/2002 change in tax banding
can make a newer 02 car far less attractive than the 01 plated model
  • VW/Skoda/Seat do both £35 and £0 VED versions of the Polo/Fabia/Ibiza.

It is also worth considering how the car will be used. A lot of the £35 tax cars have diesel engines but if they have a DPF filter in the exhaust system they will clog up if they are only used for short journeys.

You can look on the owners forum for virtually any make of car and find disgruntled owners of diesel cars with DPF filters who have waste time and money making unnecessary journeys (50mph+ for 15 minutes) to try and clear the blocked filter. If there is not a motorway handy then the poor owner ends up having to have the car towed to the dealer

As AdrianHi says, look at all the costs

your right it could be a huge false economy, considering the pitfalls of modern diesel technology.
theres so much more to consider rather than fuel economy and VED.

I'm reading negative vibes about diesels and the £35 car tax.
I do around 200 miles a week, I used to own a 1.4 mk2 Astra petrol, cost me £25 a week petrol and I think £120 road tax a year.
Changed to a 1.4 diesel 52 plate Fiesta, £30 diesel last 2 weeks and I only have to find £35 a year for the car tax.
The Astra was very rusty and had to be replaced, so the Fiesta diesel is definately a money saver.

Not to scaremonger, but a common fault with them is exhaust fumes in the cabin. It would be accompanied by a tick tick tick sound under the bonnet.
If it happens get the injector seals and leak off pipes done.

Yes you are right there, scotsman4th, the injector seals were replaced last year.
