I'd be surprised if you couldnt get a decent box second hand for £500 and get it fitted for around £300.0

Contact the nearest member of that organisation. There is no way in hell that it will cost anywhere near that much to repair.

The gearbox on my dads rubbishy A-Class went kaput. Merc wanted £5k for a new gearbox. We had it repaired by a member of fedauto, King Automatics, for £1,300.The man without a signature.0

Ahh. I had forgotton about the "multitronic" box. Dropped in favour of the steptronic / dsg box0 -

Pretty much anything can be repaired. The quote the OP has received is about as realistic as flying pigs with strawberry jam beards.0 -
To repair the CVT box via Audi will cost £1000's as stated by the OP.
Like I say, the reason Audi stopped making them...0
