I can really recommend Babies R us (Tamworth Branch in particular) for their attentiveness and help ithout being pushy (we only went to try NOT buy).

A lot depends with car seats on the weight and height of your child, you can buy a seat which uses just the seat belt or one with its own integral harness.

I had a britax eclipse until mine were 3 and now they have the seat belt only type. The britax website also has a facility which if you put in the type of car you own it will tell you if the seat fits and where the safest place for it is.

I recommend going to Mothercare or Toys R Us to try the seats in your car. (they have let me do this in the past). When you find the one that's right for you search the internet for the cheapest :D

We have a maxi cosi priori XP for our 22 month old. I think Maxi cosi have a reputation for fitting most cars and it's really easy to put in your car and gives an ultra tight fit. There's a lever thing on the front which tightens the seat belt completely so that there is absolutely no give on it. It's rock solid.

It also reclines if your child will sleep in the car but only goes upto age 4 approx. Then again my daughter point blank refused to go in hers when she got to that age anyway and just had a booster seat.

I agree with finc - maxi cosi xp are brilliant. Fits in every car we have had....not tried them in a golf though!

if you have isofix fixings...get one with isofix........if you don't or want to use car seat in other cars (that don't have isofix) then get

    mamas and papas pro-tec

why? because its the safest seat on the market (independently tested from which? magazine)....they actually carried out crash tests

i've got one...best £100 ever spent.......i found it to be cheaper instore than online (it was £125 i think when i got one online)...its £99 now!!!

it really is a fantastic seat!!!!!!

I have isofix fittings and Britax would not sell me their isofix seat as it hadn't been tested in my car.

The isofix seat from the dealership was over £200...and would last for 9 months.

There were no other isofix car seats on the market 9 months ago...this may have changed, but Isofix isn't as universal as the car dealers lead you to believe. Check an isofix car seat for your car as you would any other seat.

Agree with finc, the Maxi cosi priori XP is fabulous - it was rated by Which magazine as being the safest, really easy to get your child in and out of and you can recline it back with the child in it. We have just bought our second XP from Halfords, (our two year old has one already and we have bought a new one for our six month old to use in a couple of months). Halfords had them on special for £99 a few weeks ago, so check with them. Halfords also do free fitting and I found them really helpful.

Note, you want the XP, not the standard maxi cosi, as the XP has better side protection from memory. Maxi cosi also has quite a good web site.
