  • Hi

I am on dual fuel online with powergen, does the above rates just relate to just people taking just electricity from them?

    Thanks
I was on Dual fuel online and got the better deal saving me £130 per year.

I have just phoned to see what I am paying as I am on dual fuel online tariff, and this is what I am paying at the moment -

    1st 900 - 14.90
    secondary units 9.96
    Night tariff - 3.87

    Gas
    first 1143 - 3.0
    secondary 2.39

On the comparison website this morning they are quoting

    Primary 800 - 16.00
    secondary - 7.99
    night rate - 3.43

    Gas
    Primary 4572- 3.57
    secondary - 2.1450

So it seems on my pre Dec rate, what I am losing on one, I gain on the other.

    I'm a bit confused now!

Oh and they said I couldnt change because I was already on energy on line and had nothing to gain by changing even if I could!!

What you really need to do is count up (if you`ve got your bills)how much you`ve used over a 12 month period Jan 05 to Jan 06 and then muliply by the two tariiffs.
Make sure if they do or don`t include VAT.
You can log on at Pgen and view your bills for the last two years and print them off.
Also depending where in the country you live, there are different rates for each region (lord knows why).
The whole thing is a minefield, which is what these companies want it to be to prevent you getting the best deal.
Don`t believe that rubbish about not being able to change, tell them you`re going to Energywatch if they refuse.
    AND DO IT.

Having read all these postings I contacted Powergen. The person I spoke to admitted that existing customers pay more than new customers; she was sympathetic and agreed with me that the tarrif structure is hardly designed to reward loyalty! But she would not move me onto the cheaper tariff, so I've switched to NPower.

Well i called on the 0800 number.
They garbled an exscuse for the new tariff but then calculated i would save £140 a year if i was on it and promptly moved me straightaway.

A great saving thanks to this thread.

Because Powergen recently sent me details of increased fuel costs I looked on the switching sites to see if I should change suppliers. NPower came up cheaper but not much. I then looked closer and was suprised to see that the rates quoted on the switching sites for powergen were much cheaper than those quoted to me in my letter. I telephoned Powergen for an explanation and was told that customers who signed up after december 2005 were on a cheaper rate. I was immediately put on the cheaper rate and also given an extra 5% of my current bill by way of compensation. If I hadn't looked closely at the rates on the switching sites I would have carried on paying the higher tarif and it would have cost me over £130 extra in the year.
Please double check your tarif the lower rates are 1st 800 units per year 15.58p subsequent units 6.94p. This compares with 1st 900 units 15.13p and subsequent units 9.04p.

N Power is still cheaper but I must say that each of the three times I phoned Powergen I got through to a real person IMEDIATELY and that has got to count for something.
Thanks ever so much for this information. We've been puzzled about very high energy bills and the consistency of the comparison sites for quite a while. :)

for energy online customers who signed up after december 2005 the price is slightly lower but not for long, we have been told the prices on energy online will soon rise to match existing customers
  • Last week I did a search using simplyswitch, because I had received notification from Powergen that there standard tariff costs are going up to 17.17 p (inc VAT) for first 225 units per quarter (and increase from the just over 12 p).

However, I have just checked the switch website today to see that the Powergen price is not at this new level, but quoted at 12. something pence so I too am sceptical of the comparison sites and how uptodate the prices are (since the one I opted to switch too may also be going up.
