  • Surely the wires sit on the ribcage, not the breast tissue? Sounds like bad science to me.

I've heard that it can compress parts of the breast and cause breast cancer later on in life. I have NO idea if that's true, sounds a bit like an old wives tale to me.

Anyway in my poor dd's case non wired isn't an option. Poor kid has been 34 dd since she was 12 :( they don't make non wired bras in that size.

Haven't read whole thread but have you tried Marks and spencer? I'm a DD bordering on E and can't wear underwired. I get my bra's from M&S and whilst they may not be ultra sexy :D but not frumpy either they are very comfortable. Also Evans do DD and E cup in non-underwired but I prefer M&S.

    Just after some advice please.

DD is 11 and is quite tall and is starting to develop. She needs to be fitted for her 1st bra and dont know where to take her. People have suggested M&S but have heard some horror stories and dont actually know anyone personally whom has used their bra fitting service.

She is also partially sighted and would prefer it if I go with her, this may be abit of a problem as Im a wheelchair user and not too well ATM. Some shops still dont cater for us wheelie users.

I used M and S and the size they told me was awful. Too tight both round my back and cup!!

As for your wheelchair thats appalling    You should be able to go anywhere!

As others have said, the service in M&S tends to be very good but the fits of the bras can be very hit and miss. I have been fitted in various department stores and many of the fitters have said that M&S sizing is very odd compared with everybody else's. I found this out for myself when, size 32FF and not having bought an M&S bra for years, I went into the Oxford Street flagship store to have a browse and discovered that in M&S sizing there is no such thing as a FF  :rotfl: - it just goes straight from F to G!

Any advice about the effect of underwiring on developing breasts is surely based on bad fitting. As anybody at Bravissimo will tell you, the wiring should lie flat against bone, and should not come into contact with breast tissue at all. I suspect the reason this may cause more of a problem for young girls is that when they're growing, chances are they're often going to be wearing a bra that's not quite the right size (before they upgrade to the next cup size up) so I suppose it's more likely to cause a problem than with fully grown women.

Personally for fittings I now only trust Bravissimo, and it's a shame in a way that they only cater for D cup and over because the service is so personal and professional, and the fittings (no tape-measures in sight) are so tailor-made, that they would be the ideal place for mums to take their daughters for their first bras. The Bravissimo changing rooms are a very cool, "girly" environment too!

P.S. I live in the same area as Penny-Pincher and there is a branch of Contessa nearby. And a Primark too.

  • After much persuading (because she doesnt really need it!), I bought a couple of kiddy style bras for StepD1 on saturday. £4 for matching bra and knickers from Dunnes Stores. Nice soft cotton and pretty designs.
  • Hi

    Thanks for all the replies!

I am not too sure where we are going to go yet but have heard the Debenhams do a fitting service too-has anyone tried these?

    Thanks again.

I tried m&s for her but the only ones they had in her back size (34) were underwired, and evans don't go down that far. The other problem she has is that all the bras in her size seem to be really patterned which shows through her school blouse. Poor kid hates her boobs already, and I can sympathise. I have to order my bras online as I am an I cup :o

    Hi PP
Ive used Debenhams fitting service and they were fantastic (found out I had been wearing the wrong size for years!) I went to MandS with a friend recently and she left quite stressed because it did seem to be more of a sales push than a good fitting.
I think the choice of bras at Debenhams is as good as MansS now as well so thats what i would recommend for what its worth

just thought i would my tuppence to this.. my daughter is 11 and is developing at a rate of knots so to speak .. i had got her training bras but thought i should get some advice on to what size she was etc, as i was in aylesbury took her to M&S to ask there advice and they were fantastic, they took a shy nervous girl and turned her into a woman (daughters words when she got her first bra) lol, They measured her through her top so dont take a let her wear a thick top. They told me which size, were to get that size and asked if daughter wanted them to help adjust it.. she didnt so they showed her how to adjust the straps etc on the hanger.. could fault them and they way they handled a nervous child..

From personal experience Debenhams are fantastic, have recommended my sister to take my niece there to get her fitted for her first bra.

I would not recommend La Senza, as I went there when I was about 15 to get fitted with a nice bra, and they just sold me one that was so small I could not breath
