Folks if you have issues with the story or a different opinion - then thats what the individual discussion links from each news story are for :)
(Incidentally, the discussion link on that one leads to a non-existent thread)

Now that the link resolves, maybe I will :D

    Hi folks,

We're investigating the effects of the News Ticker currently and we're not seeing any of the delays that youre reporting Biggles and the slowness you're experiencing is not a commonly reported issue.

You've noted that you're using IE8, is there anything else you can tell us about your setup? Processor, RAM, Operating System, graphics card etc. might help.

Also, have you got any other browsers loaded such as Firefox or Chrome? Have you tried browsing the Forum with those to see if there's any difference?

    It's killing my processor

It maxes out each time a new line starts "typing". If I use the little arrows to jump left and right to go to to the next headline (i.e. to prevent the scrolling applet runnning), then processor load drops right down to near-zero. No other apps or pages are open. This is in IE8.

In Firefox 3.5 it's slightly better, but still a big problem.

System spec is a little old but I'm sure that there are many more out there that are worse ....

    Intel P IV 2.5Ghz
    512 MB RAM
    XPSP2

Anything that can be done to improve this would be appreciated.

(Personally I would like to see an option to turn it off entirely, or to only display new headlines, but I guess that's an editorial decision).

FWIW - I can confirm similar experience to KingL (^), but with 1MB Ram, the peaks and troughs are less interruptive, but they do show clearly against the news ticker (which personally I am happy with as is - but I do only read it on the one main forum page, after that one read it loses any relevance imho - it ain't news any longer).

Can we get some feedback on the performance issues, please?

You may not have received many reports about it but that doesn't mean users aren't suffering (it took me 3 days of clearing discspace, defragging HDDs, doing indepth virus / malware diagnostics, etc before I narrowed the problem down to the MSE ticker!).

FWIW, my graphics card is Nvidia GeForce4 440 Go 64Mb. (other system spec info is given 2 posts up from here).

But I'm not sure the problem is with my set-up. I have tried it on another PC with the same results as reported above

Following a complete restore of my machine back to factory settings (XP SP2) here are performance measurements using IE6, IE7 and Firefox 3.0.12 and 3.5.1

    IE6

If anyone at MSE towers cares to engage with a diagnostic conversation about the performance of your website, send me a PM.

  • Hey guys,

We are looking at the problem and its likely that the ticker will be removed and replaced for something that should have less impact on your machines in the near future.

    Thanks

I had never noticed the ticker was doing that.

What I get is below. Running Firefox 3.5.1 on Linux.

OK. For those of you using Firefox, you can use the extension below with Adblock Plus to remove the ticker from all forum pages. :)

    Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper

Or just use the following filter rule in Adblock Plus.

Offer this fwiw ( I am not a techie) but using Google Chrome rather than IE or F/fox vastly reduced the impact of the ticker.

Any update on when it will be removed, it is really getting to be a nuisance now and browsing the forums is painful due to its effect.
