    Well done on securing a new position. It makes my blood boil to hear what employers try and get away with these days.

    A couple of years ago, I had real problems with my own employer, and ended up hiring a solicitor to point out that they were acting illegally and lodge a grievance. I also joined Amicus.

    They backed off two years ago, but under the pretext of current market conditions made me redundant earlier this year. As I'd been marginalised and excluded for over two years, frankly I was better off out of there. They attempted to get rid of me on the cheap, but it ended up costing them the equivalent of 14 months salary.

    My Union rep - and subsequently my solicitor - did a fantastic job for me. My situation was helped by the facts, which more or less spoke for themselves and were reflected in the size of the settlement.

    I am now training for a new career, bankrolled of course, by my former employer's settlement.

    Makes my blood boil what some employers think they can get away with.

    They also played the "submit your resignation or we will sack you for incompetence" trick with one of the secretaries. She was too upset to stand up to them and simply signed the proposed compromise agreement (yes she did take solicitor's advice, but couldn't face the risk or confrontation of taking matters further). A couple of months on, her confidence is still in pieces. Simply not fair - she was an incredibly hard working and committed employee with simply too many people to work for.

    There are some bad people out there.

    Agreed - I remember one of my old managers telling me when he was interviewed one of the questions asked is how would you manage someone out the business if required.

    His response was that he would try and develop and help them first - He didnt get that job!!!

    My feelings on Amicus are mixed. I have seen them go in and have some real impact in certain situations and been next to useless in others. I think

    I think it comes down to the individual rep and their level of experience and attitude.

    I'd add to that: document everything, and if possible join a union. Take photocopies, get everything in writing. That way if the worst happens and you end up getting pushed out and don't get another job, you can amuse yourself by taking them to an industrial tribunal for constructive dismissal. (Hey, you'll have the time! :rotfl:) That can result in you getting paid compensation, but will certainly result in giving them a whole lot of stress.

    Sounds similar to what happened to me when I worked for a large furniture retailer, each month I would be sat at a desk having a performance meeting where the store manager would wave a sheet of sales figures in front of me and inform me that my sales had not reached the required level and action plans were written to help me improve over the following month.

    It started off friendly enough but with me being unable to meet the required sales targets (they did not look at total sales but individual product groups and of course product cover) they started issuing warnings. I came to realise my days were numbered when I had a pretty good month meeting the sales targets but just missing out on the product cover - I thought it was a marked improvement but alas the manager still got head office to issue a written warning.

    I knew I could never be the type of sales person they wanted so handed in my notice after working there for seven years. It took me six months to find a new job and yes I was sanctioned for leaving a job but it was the best thing I have ever done.
