jump or be pushed

A few of our team including myself are on a performance review program.

We are being set up to lose our jobs but all being done in a clever and documented way. Objectives we have been set are impossible but unfortunately its not a place where you can challenge objectives without being seen as negative or shot down.

We have probably 6-8 weeks left before the process is done and we are sacked.

My question is do I resign or let them push me out.

If I resign then my CV looks stronger and will get a decent reference. However I wont be eligible for any benefits as govt see it as I chose to leave.

If I let them push me out I will be eligible for benefits but it wont look great on my CV.

Two of the team have already taken the resignation option but wondered what your thoughts were?

We are well skilled and in normal situation would walk into other jobs quickly but there is a lot less out there now than a few years ago when i last looked.

Thanks.

First of all why do you think people are going to be sacked.
A performance review is exactly what it says it is.
They cannot just sack people. Redundancy (if that is the case) procedures have to be followed and you have to know about it in advance.

What makes you think you are being set up

If you resign you CV doesnt look stronger, it makes you look irrespobsible. Being made redundant is no fault of your own so that would look stronger on your CV
Your confidence about walking into another job quickly astounds me. Are you for real.......

I'm sorry if i seem blunt but your post is giving me the impression that you have a bit of a persecution complex, my apologies if i am wrong. Do you have
any definite proof of everything that you have stated in your post.

Stick it out till you dont have to, at least its money coming in.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I work in a sales job and if my quarterly objectives are not achieved I could be on disciplinary and sacked. Is that what the OP means rather than redundancy?

    Thanks for the responses.

Yes its a sales organisation. We have been hit badly by the credit crunch and were geared up to expect redundancies 3 or 4 months ago. These never happened but the pressure has been turned up and now a number of us are on review.

A performance review that is based on impossible objectives will mean you fail. This process has been used before and am not aware of anyone completing the review and staying. The language and tonality used during the reviews is very much driven towards pushing the person out and historically that is what has happened.

My issue is not being made redundant. My concern is that my CV will show me having been sacked for underperformance. This is on a team where 60 hours a week is the norm.

My confidence about walking into another job is based on offers that have been made. I dont mean to come across as arrogant but I have worked in the profession for a long time and jobs are available (albeit at less pay or perks). I am also not fussy about what I do and if it means a 50% pay cut then I will take it.

V.Lucky - yes your pretty much spot on. The issue is that our objectives have always been completely unrealistic. Last year our top performer hit 65%, this year they are tracking to come in at 30%. To put this in context last year I came in at 55% and this year will come in at 20%.

While that may look terrible its due to number manipulation and also key accounts being reclassified so they dont count despite the work that goes into them. In reality we are tracking with the market.

Mcneff - Deliberately didnt use the word redundancy. From a PR perspective the company doesnt want to make redundancies and never has done. They use perf mgmt to manage people out the business when they need to reduce a team. Accept your point about sticking it out as long as possible but still need an answer to the question about whether resignation (and positive reference) or dismissal is the way to go.

My heart says move on because of the impact its having on my life and health, but my head agrees with you to stick it out.

    Thanks

Why don't you look for another job, and when you have a definite offer resign. Surely they won't be able to 'manage' you all out of a job, they must need to keep some.

But if you are already under pressure, it is probably better to look for a less stressful job.

    FWIW
My job finished on 1st. April last year yet there is a no redundancy policy in operation so I am still in post, same terms & conditions & same pay. Early on 5 colleagues were redeployed & another 2 took VER & are very unhappy but they could not cope with the stressful situation. I have no problem sitting put until matters resolve. Management have caused this situation so it is up to them to resolve it. Legal advice points to either constructive or unfair dismissal if things do not go in my favour so it is a win win situation for me as long as I hang on in there.
I wish you all the best in your situation.

So stop working on the key accounts and work on those that do count to your performance.

If any of the others want to leave anyway see if they will had you their deals to get your numbers up.

I would have thought that in sales this happens all the time so is not a stain on the CV.

Apply for another job and as soon as you get one, jump. If you don't get one, stay until you are pushed. Resigning without another job to go to shows a lack of commitment, unreliability... issues which would be a concern to a new employer.

    Cheers Gents,

Am actively looking for other jobs and sticking in there while doing so. Not easy but no other real option. Thanks for the advice.
