Eden Camp is quite a distance outside York, and might take up a day on its own.

If you only have 2 days then there is plenty to see without going outside the City walls. Your hotel is certain to have leaflets suggesting what to see/where to go. Just walk around the old streets around the Minster. If you can, get hold of a book called 'The Snickelways of York' by Mark W Jones http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/203-7510998-1336731

I was born in York, lived in a nearby village, worked there and have been back a few times since. Put some comfortable shoes on because walking is the best way of getting around.

    Good luck!

    Park and ride
There's loads of P&R parking places, just park the car and get ont he bus. One of them stops right outside the Railway museum. DS#1 was more made up about the 'bendy bus' than he was about seeing the engines.
    Ring the tourist board http://www.york-tourism.co.uk/

Thought Jorvik was quite pricey and also disappointing in that you ride around it rather than being able to walk around at your own pace. In comparison felt the Castle Museum was brilliant value, has 2 sections and is certainly a whole morning or whole afternoon visit.

Dungeons were very entertaining if a little scary for younger children as they are very dark for most of the way round.

Railway Museum brilliant, boys loved it, but my neices did get a bit bored.

    Hi
I love York! My daughter went to Uni there for a couple of years and I used to love visiting. The whole place is great! We went to the Art Gallery a couple of times-that is free(well it was in 2003). The Railway Museum is worth a visit but I did find it a bit boring. A look down the Shambles is a must
and one of the Ghost Walks on an evening.
Hope you have a fab time

    How about the wheel?
It's so new, I'm not even sure if it's running yet, but from this site http://www.bbc.co.uk/northyorkshire/content/webcams/wheel_webcam.shtml you can see that it's there...

Brilliant place to stay. Just had a short break and it was a choice between Durham and York. Durham won on this occasion - but York next. Must be a closet Cathedral fan?

Not sure why everyone's giving you advice on parking. As your hotel is in the centre - I'd park in their car park! ;)

You must go to the Railway Museum - big boy's toys with a vengeance. The Chinese Class locos are awesome. The Minster is a must - worth the climb up the tower. Bit of vertigo possible as you cross part of the roof - but take a deep breath, it's worth it. Betty's Cafe (best cheap loans on other threads - before you go!!) is a must. Best cup of coffee / sticky buns in the UK - but not the cheapest. Other than that - just walk the place. And enjoy it.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

Depending on when you are going, there is a new 'Yorkshire wheel' due to be opened next to the railway museum any time soon (delayed).
