Data protection, they asked for what postcode, then a house number, then your name and water acct number. Im thinking they may well be right.

Hiding behind their incorrect interpretation of data protection. Postcode and house number is all they needed. They may take your name for reference but that's it. Sorry but I think your water company was wrong on this one.I certainly give this kind of information out on a daily basis.

Sorry but you are wrong, read the data protection act for yourself.
A company is not allowed to give out data held about a PERSON but that does not apply to a property. "Personal data are defined in the Data Protection Act, as follows:-
"data which relate to a living individual who can be identified:-
    * from those data; or
    * from those data and other information which is in the possession of, or is likely to come into the possession of, the data controller and includes any expression of opinion about the individual and any indication of the intentions of the data controller or any other person in respect of the individual"
    http://dataprotectionact.org/4.html
If you call them and say right at the beginning of the call that all you want is how the property is supplied then they will be able to provide that.
Water companies get these calls all the time, from estate agents, solicitors, home owners and tenants etc etc Nothing new for them and there is no reason at all for them not to supply the information.

As for the dd thing (which you keep harping back to) Check the water act yourself

    http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1991/Ukpga_19910056_en_1.htm

You can also email http://www.ofwat.gov.uk/ and ask them.

What I have said is correct, the fact that a company has got around it does not make it wrong.
Stealing is illegal but thousands of people get around that law, speeding is illegal, using a mobile phone whilst driving is illegal.....Still see it happen though don't you.

The act is back and white as you put it.. Just like any other document. The bible is black and white but how many people actually agree on all of it ?

I think it might be time to move on now and this stupid argument is not getting anywhere, to be honest I am sick of saying the same thing but trying to find a different way of using the same words.

Why not just knock on the door and ask?

The meter will most likely be under the stopcock hatch on the public pavement-so go and look!

There is nothing in the DPA that stops a company from saying how a property is supplied.
If you are told no then ask why > When buying a property or even viewing it the meter issue be clear cut.
Not sure what you mean about "publish the full details" the information about if a house has a water meter and what the RV is, is again nothing to do with the DPA but more then likely they would not give you the full meter details or the amount of the last bill as that can be covered by the DPA

I work for a water company, and that question is asked frequently. Nothing to do with Data Protection, as Gothicfairy says, because the house is a house not a person :D

This is exactly what I did, following my meter installation. I walked around the neighbourhood to check who had meters and who didn't. You don't even have to lift the hatch, as the ones with meters underneath are much larger than those with just stopcocks. Another clue is signs of repair work around the hatch when the meter was installed.
