My First Ebay Sale... and Royal Mail lost it!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I'm so angry - I made my first ever transaction on ebay which was selling a Sony PSP Game. Sold for £9.50 :T and I posted it by First Class Recorded Delivery on Tuesday morning. It's going to a city only 50 miles from where I live (also a big-ish city) so I expected it to be there on Wed am, but it wasn't, neither was it on Thursday morning and still isn't now

I phoned Royal Mail earlier today and was told that it's only lost if it "has been missing for over 15 working days" - that's 3 weeks!!! That's pathetic! Isn't it?

What I am worried about is that it is my first ebay sale and that the buyer is going to say something about this and if it's a negative comment, it's going to give me a "100% negative" rating for future transactions :(.

Please help!! :o

There's not an awful lot you can do except keep in contact with your buyer. Email them to assure you've not scammed them and give them the tracking no (you said it was recorded delivery). I'm sure they will understand as long as you are good about things.

Has the buyer contacted you to say that the item hasn't been received?
It may be that they were out/at work when the postman tried to deliver and it's being held at the depot awaiting collection. Don't worry just yet...

If it is lost then you sign a claim form at the post office for losses of up to £30.

Ive had no end of problems sending and receiving packets and parcels in the last 3 weeks.

They seem to save them up for a week or so before delivering.

Are your or the recipient in or around Newcastle/Gateshead ?

The recipient is in the East Midlands, I'm in the West Midlands. Royal Mail have "assured" me that no delivery has been attempted yet.

I've emailed the buyer to ask if they've received it yet because some time ago I sent a recorded item to my Uncle which arrived safe and sound but wasn't actually marked as delivered - I could have claimed for it (but didn't!) :D I hope it hasn't happened here. Hence me asking if he'd received it yet! I'd better wait for a reply before saying I can't track it and yes, in the confirmation email I supplied the reference number for him.

They wouldn't even know that as recorded delivery isn't tracked like Special Delivery is.

IME recorded items take longer than first class - if you'd sent it normal first, it probably would have got there next day. :(

Just keep waiting - my policy on eBay is to wait a reasonable amount of time (e.g. 10 days - week and a half) - if it's not arrived by then, usually it's not going to. At that point, refund the buyer and apologise for it getting lost in the post. Then fill in the Royal Mail claim form and include your recorded delivery receipt to claim for loss of the item. You will only be able to do this after the 15 working days have passed - just take the loss in the meantime until you get paid out from RM.

& above all be honest with the buyer - that way, they have no excuse to leave you negative feedback before you've sent them their refund. If someone left me a negative in that situation after I've taken the time to correspond and explain things to them, then they can whistle for their refund.

So how do I refund the transaction and do the credit card fees get refunded automatically too? I still don't believe this has happened with my first transaction and the cheek of Royal Mail saying that First class is only supposed to arrive in 15 working days and 1 working day is just an "aim". I hope they sink with competition :T

Now the buyer isn't responding to my email and because of that I haven't left any feedback, and neither has he. Previously he had a quick response time when confirming the address. All I said in the email was if he had received the item. Is that so hard to answer? Nodding dogs for yes, shaking heads for no. Some people...

    What is a 'chargeback'? :o

Personally I would leave it as it is now, don't leave feedback at all and wait for the buyer to contact you if he has a problem.

You've done everything you can to make sure he is happy, if he hasn't got the item then wait for him to tell you now, but keep your recorded delivery slip for an extra few months just in case.
