Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Monday 6th July! This is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly, but if not, it's not a problem.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good!
Morning OS chums! hi.gif

Like a lot of us - I was an Enid Blyton addict too! I loved 'The Mystery of..' series that she wrote too, even more than the Famous Five I think, and collected as many as I could as a kid! I always loved the St Claires and the Mallory Towers books, I so wanted to go to a school like those and have midnight feasts!

Pink - Happy belated anniversary to you and your husband.
Welcome Covgirl!
Redruby - woooohoooo I saw your pics! Well done you on working out the link and I loved seeing them!
kjsam - Thanks for the reminder honey, but drinking is not something that I ever forget! For the last, well, at least 10 years, I have drunk a minimum of 2 litres of water every day without fail. It's just about the only healthy eating thing I have ever maintained. I have never drunk coffee or tea (til I discovered redbush tea this past 2 yrs) or squash so I just have a bottle of water in each room of the house and make sure I drink a minimum of four of them a day. It's easy really once you get used to it.
blondy - You must miss your OH but the time will go more quickly than you think!
Sunny - I used to love my mother reading to me - she always read books with words in that were slightly too hard for us so we had to ask, and that meant at school we were always top of the class in vocabulary tests!
Lesley - I hope your daughter is feeling better now hon
Bitsy - I loved 'fatty' too! He was so clever and they had such great adventures!
Bargain - I read Judy Blume too!
Candygirl - good luck with the op hon, glad your daughter is OK
Haribo - my nephews love sleeping in the tent when they stay over.. they have even been known to put it up in the lounge and them sleep in it!

Talking of The Famous Five; I am not sure if anyone remembers 'The Comic Strips' TV version of the books called 'Five go mad in Dorset' with Adrian Edmondson as !!!!!!, and French and Saunders as George and Anne? It was highly irreverant and very funny. Anyway, they filmed a lot of that episode in Berry Pomeroy near the castle so a group of friends and I used to go picnic there occasionally and have Famous Five parties and replicate as much of the food as we could - including lashings of ginger beer! :rotfl::rotfl:

Well we had corned beef pastryless quiche yesterday cos it's so quick to make and delicious too. My OH went to do a bootsale but it rained within an hour of it opening so he only cleared about £5. He is taking everything but some books down to the charity shop and I will offer the books on Freecycle as I know they usually go well.

I hope you all have a great start to your weeks. Gentle and non sticky hugs.gifto all who want or need one.

Morning Diva and all who follow!
    Been awake since 4.30:eek:
Haven't been on for a few days, been manic here.:o DS left with his Dad on Saturday. He's been packing for weeks, but it was only when it was all in the van, that it hit me properly. I cried my eyes out when he went, even though I'd promised myself I wouldn't:o I'm better today, although it seems odd without him.
DD rang me really worried. She thinks she may be prgnant. I was delighted, although if she is it wasn't planned. She has been with her fiance for five years and she is 23, not 14! Still, I'd have liked the wedding to come first, maybe I'm old-fashioned:rotfl: Hopefully, we'll find out today. She was due to start her nursng training in October, so that will have to go on hold!

((((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))) to anyone who needs them

Bargain: I loved Judy Blume. When I was a library assistant we had a copy of hers called "Forever", the librarian didn't know whether to put it in the children's section or the Adults! In the end we had two copies, and no child under 13 was allowed to borrow it!!
Didn't like The Famous Five, but Loved Mallorry Towers and St Claires' stories! then I went on the Elinor Brent-Dyer's Chalet School series, all 58 of them:rotfl:

    Have a great day all!
    I Believe in saving money!!!:T
A Bargain is only a bargain if you need it!

  • Hi Hilstep hon!

I loved the Chalet girl series too and I think I had most of them. I used to spend all my pocket money on books - would save it up and then go buy the next one out..

Lots of hugs to you hon, hope the news about your daughter is whatever makes her the happiest!

    Morning all

Had to get up early today to iron my collars - now i don't normally do ironing - in fact i wasn't even sure that we had one - but i have to wear a linen collar with tabs in the newish job. Could have done with some starch really. I found a recipe which requires cornstarch  is that cornflour?

Amyhoo off to getready for w*rk in a bit and then i'm jumping straight back onto the Flylady wagon that i fell off yonks ago. Hope you're days are way more exciting than mine :)
I'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 2008

    Morning Everyone

Stefejb - starched collars - that sounds posh

Had a good weekend but am feeling it now. Lovely, sunny and fresh here again - perfect.

Today am off out for a business meeting first thing then need to pop in Lakeside which is nearby the meeting. OH wants to look at bikes and I need to get some bits for DD's birthday which is Friday.

Just going to get some essential paperwork done now and will be doing the ironing once home.

Chicken burgers and fries for dinner as DS's friend is round again.

Talking of books - I am reading a murder mystery at the moment which involves a woman who runs a cookie shop and there are recipes all thoughout :rotfl:so its very OS & was from the library too (team points for me :j)

    Have a great day.

Redruby - Cagney and Lacey :rotfl:yes I could completely pass for the plumper brunette (fror the life of me cannot remember her name)

The new potatos with bacon and cheese was very nice - just layered up boiled new pots, fried bacon lardons and grated cheese in a baking dish and in the oven for 20mins. Also out olive oil on the pots.

    Morning everyone.
Busy day today. Have to dash up Mr S before I take DS to pre school as we need some kebab skewers for DD cake (basically we are making a little girl sitting in an ivory dress next to a muffin as a birthday cake with a candle in it - it's supposed to be a mixture of birthday and christening celebration). In order to anchor the little girls head on we need a stick to push into the body of the cake and the head. For things like this we'd normally use spaghetti but the cake is so large it really needs to be wooden. Also need some more fondant icing to make her dress so quick shop for me. Then back to my mums to work on the cake all day. My mum gets really stressed as she's a perfectionist but I do enjoy this sort of thing!
Have the priest who's performing the baptism round tonight so no idea what we'll have for tea and when.
Garden is lovely and tiday :D Me and H worked really hard yesterday to get it mowed. edged, weeded and swept. DD had fun in the garden too as it's a whole new space for her to bum shuffle round and explore. Only problem is she likes to eat things so you have to watch her like a hawk!
So very little OS planned today so sorry for the lack of content. My FIL gave me a load of reduced free range eggs (already have plenty of my own) so think I will plan a baking-fest one day. Have quiches to make anyhow.

MSD - your picnic sounds like a great laugh
Hilstep - As my friend put it the only downside to having kids first before the wedding is the fact that you'll never have the money to get married! And this from a woman who had both her's first! Hope your DD is happy with the news.

Have a good day all, OS or not.

    Morning all,

Quite nice here at the moment, it has been raining all night, and looks like it might start again soon.

Need to phone the vet this morning, little dog had a gland problem, and her rear end is smelling :o, sorry if thats tmi.

I have just taken some cooked lamb out of the freezer, think I might do it in gravy in the oven, and some mash and veg, dd has decided she wants to be a veggie , I have been putting her off for ages, but she seemes determined, so going to have to think of veggie things as well now

The usual washing and cleaning to be done today, I was going into the garden, will have to see if it rains, if it does, I might look up a few easy veggie meals to freeze.

Hilstep, Poor you, I know I will cry buckets when my dd leaves home, I hope your dd get what she wants either way xx

Hugs to all in need, have good days all xx

    Good morning all :hello:

Don't seem able to sleep beyond 5.30 at the moment. Have already been looking at directions for DD1 and emailed them to her. She starts a three week work placement today. She is so tired at the moment and was saying how her friends tease her because she always needs so much sleep. I'm just wondering whether she's lacking something in her veggie diet.
Picked our first courgette yesterday :j(photo taken of course by OH :D)

Diva - a nutritionist friend told us about redbush a few years ago, had never heard of it before but we drink it quite a lot now as I don't like to drink a lot of caffeine. I like the woody flavour but most of my friends hate it!
Candy - good luck with the op.
    Hilstep - (((hugs)))

Will go and wake OH in a minute and make some plans for today. The garden needs lots of weeding and the sun is shining so that might be the first job before it gets too hot.

    Have a good day everyone
