Happy Anniversary Pinks
:D
Ok a bit of advice from you green fingered bunch....
Just been for a wander around the village with DS1 and attempt at getting him to sleep, it failed . Still i did pinch some cuttings, in my defence they were hanging over various walls/fences onto the paths
. Now what do i do, do i stick em in a jar of water and hope they sprout of do i put em in a pot with compost ?
This is my new OS way of getting very very bare garden up and running:D
Tea was delish, all tidied up now :T.
Ah also i bought a fireplace off ebay which was mahogany, but i wanted it white, so i thought a quick tickle with a bit of sandpaper and a coat of gloss would work. No it didn't its all streaky now, so i think the distressed look will have to do. I'll go and take pic please tell me your honest opinion. Does it look ok or just like a dodgy paint job

As for your cuttings, you need some rooting powder, available form garden centers, dip the roots in and then plant them. otherwise, put them in some water and wait for them to start sprouting xx0 -
Bargainbird I have a fire surround that started life off in a deep mahogany varnish that's now painted cream. What I did was sand it down very well then undercoat with white undercoat, two coats. Then I used cream eggshell, also two coats, and it came up great. The eggshell is a more forgiving paint to use as it goes on very similar to emulsion without all the 'brushing out' to do. Just as well as I put paint on like jam :rotfl:
As far as your cuttings go I'd put them in water to root before putting into compost
Edited to add: The paint job on the fire surround has lasted 6 years so far without chipping - a miracle in this house which also had an extra dog in it until March!0 -
Thanks ladies
, ok it's a toss up now shabby chic and 20 more layers of
paint ........You know your getting old when yougo to the pub sit outsideand admire the hanging basket

You can use honey instead of rooting powder if you haven't got any - it works just as well in a pinch though it's messier and isn't cheaper any more.
I like the distressed look, too, but it's whether you can live with it that matters!0 -
Sunnygirl....laughed at your terminology...putting paint on like jam....but know exactly what you mean as that's how I do it too, I usually fall down on the sanding as I am soooo lazy...I want instant results.
Good luck with your cuttings Bargainbird, I usually find that if I put them in a slightly gritty compost mix I get better results.
Night all

Mr Pink really really enjoyed his present, thank you very much!Churchmouse wrote: »Happy Anniversary to the Pinks  I'm sure you'll have a lovely day(was Haribo as big a pest on the day as she is now:rotfl:)
She was perfectly behaved that day Churchie, don't know what went wrong after that though. If she misbehaves on here give me a shout and I'll post a pic of her aged 11 in her bridesmaid's dress.
Thanks for all the lovely posts about our anniversary. We had a fabulous day. Very little Old Style, but lots of fun and laughs and dinner out. Dd is away this weekend moving out of halls and into her house at uni so next weekend when she's back and can take charge of the boys we're off to a hotel for a night on our own.
Bargainbird, like redruby I've had a glass or two  of wine but I like the distressed look.
covgirl, I've never heard the tip about honey before but I think I'll give it a go with some rosemary cuttings I want to take.
Off for an early night.Sleep well everyone.

And the neighbours can remove their earplugs.
I still have the bridesmaid dress. Dtwin2 wore it yesterday to get married to the dog. :rotfl:
Bargainbird, TBcompletelyH.... I would remove the white gloss and try it again with eggshell. It goes on much easier and gives a great finish.I did that once though I still didn't like it and now it's wood again.
Ruby... A weed festival  Are you high m'dear?
I've had some wine tooand am currently in the garden listening to the girlies chattering (and farting) in the tent. They think they're sleeping on their own out here but I intend to join them when they've conked out.
I like eavsdropping on them. So far we've had disscussions about everything....
Twin1...."what would you do if I fell off a cliff and died"
Twin2... I'd cry
Twin 1... (unconvincingly).... Um, yeah, me too.
They've now moved on to working out if their dad will die before me because he's older and how they haven't heard me swear for aaaages.:D;) (Note to self.... get their hearing tested)
They've had a midnight feast and I am proclaimed the best Mummy in the world. :A
Job done.
Sleep well everyone
