  • Hi,
    my situation is as follows:
I am in the third year of my degree course. I am married. My husband works full time. I have the full amount of student loan I can get but did not get a loan towards tuition fees (I paid them in full myself). We have a mortgage. We have alot of credit card/ loan repayments. I have some of the studnet loan amount left which I have budgeted to pay myself with each month to cover bills. Our total income - expenditure = 0 (this is without any spening on unnecessary items - just covering bills, food, travel). I could scrape by if I just needed to feed myself until the end of the course but I am on an art course and need to spend a fair amount on materials for my projects and the end of year degree show.
With your experience, what do you think are my chances of getting an ALF? Most of the credit cards / loans are in my husband's name (misspent youth!) but will the university still discount them and say that I can afford the course as my husband is working full time? I really cannot afford to buy any materials myself.
    Any advice?

Hi, i want to apply to the ALF fund, because i am running out of money! i have at the moment £200 left to live with until april!!! so..no luck applying for a job and a lot of expenses such as petrol, mobile bill and credit card bill with final demand:( 3 months worth of statements is fine....except £233 was transferred out to my actual student account(using current account mainly and which loan is coming into) £233 was transferred beacause i was that much over my overdraft limit...now would i have to provide 3 months statements of my student account? or would just the one month the money was transferred into be fine...the problem is that if i go to the 3rd month back of statement it shows £300 being withdrawn 3 times in 3 days....this was taken out to buy a car, would this be very ifffy, or could i get away with giving one month of statements but bear in mind i woudl be giving 3 months worth of my main account... any help appreciated..

You can either wait till next month so you dont have to send the statement with the car withdrawrals on it if you possibly can or just tell them what it was for if you need the car for a reason they should understand but it wouldnt look good if you dont really need it I'd say

If you had the other money put in to cover not exceeding your overdraft just explain it. You wont know unless you try and you wont get anything unless yopu try its just deciding if you want to wait or not
    Thanx

  • how much power do they have to look into your finances? eg if you transferred all your money into another bank account, waited 3 months then provided them with the last 3 statements of the emptied account could they somehow find out?

or what if you have money saved in an ISA but your bank account is in the red (interest free overdraft), could you just provide your bank statements and not tell them about the ISA? would this work?

You have to justify every expenditure over a certain value (was £100 last year, not sure if it has changed), so you can just write on your statements that the 3 x £300 was for a car...

whilst not sure if it is in the eyes of the law, in my book that is fraudulent. I am sure it has been asked elsewhere as well but if what you mention is something you are thinking of doing then don't, your cheating others out of the money, the checks are there for a reason.

Ithink its for people in need not to help those who think that they should just give it a go and see if they can get anything, are you from a particular 'needy' category. Im a mother who works full time, and studies full time and have to fork out £600 per month in childcare fees now im needy but yet i have been told that it doesnt look like i will get anything so i will have to muddle on. the fund is there to help peopl not for people to take advantage cause they believe that it is 'free' money if you have nothing to hide then producing your bank statements should not be a problem.

I hope that they will and can make in depth checks because clearly you are not in 'need' if you feel that you need to clear your bank account first. I f you ar egenuine then why would you need to do this, this sort of behaviour just screws up the whole system for those that REALLY do need help.
  • hi,

Am a final year student, i was made bankrupt in the beginning of my final year of studies, ive since received two maximum loan payments, the things is ive spent it all, not on extravagant thinkg but basic living etc. Im have nothing left. I dont even have a fiver to my name, Is ther any chance i can apply for the grant. For the last months i have been receiving hardship trying to get my expenditure down only recently my money was all finished, ive tried to find a job, applied quite few places and i got rejected because they dont alllow bankrupt to work in finanaciial places(call centre). Ive even tried to get a student over draft from a bank just to get me by my final year, nothing. I cant even apply for a credit card.

Im really struggling, and im literally thinking of packing in my studies. can they help. Also my tuition fees are not being paid cos i had to repeat due to mitigating circumstances.

Sounds like you need to see the financial advisor at uni. They wont give you atl because you dont have a student loan but they may be able to advise something else. What about bar work could you get a bar job? would they have any jobs in uni? somewhere they take on students
    Thanx
