What do you guys think of this....

July 3rd- £40 deposit at Abbey branch in central London.
July-3rd two £4500 separate withdrawals from different branches in Preston.

Also I have spotted a £10 deposit into my account from a branch in Croydon on June 8th.

These deposits were not made by me or anybody I know. IMO they are clearly related but am just trying to wrap my head around what their significance is.

Why would somebody do this to my account?? How did they find out that I had £XXX balance?? The only valid ID that I even possess is a provisional drivers license. Could this potentially be an inside job of sorts??

God I would love some answers after this has been investigated!!

LOL - you realise you're the OP don't you, i.e. this whole thread is for you! Basically, someone has got I.D of yours otherwise they are a bank employee - either way, it'll be easy to prove it isn't you.... Without I.D no cashier in the land would hand over £4.5k - they just wouldn't unless they were dodgy which is unlikely....

If they got your I.D then think back, have you thrown away stuff like a bank statement, purchased online using your debit card? Sent a cheque etc etc....

It could be anything but sounds like classic fraud - the deposits are sometimes to let the cashier see activity and maybe recognise 'you' when you return to withdraw - i.e., sorry i've forgotten my I.D but that woman served me yesterday' kinda thing ;)

Don't worry, just tell Abbey to pull their finger out - 2wks isn't acceptable. Also they should provide you with funds until this is sorted - i.e. cash whenever you need it (taken from balance or if you're skint now they should assume it is fraud and give an interest free o/d until sorted out)

Preston branch will have signed withdrawal slips and signed over riding transaction form from the dates any money was taken out. They may even have a photocopy of the ID used as well. They should also be able to rerun the CCTV and use the time of withdrawal to check who was making the transaction at the time. An inside job in the branch is highly unlikely. The most common way money is taken out due to fraud is by Bill Payment not cash out over the counter.

It may be worth getting your branch to check your address history on their system. These withdrawls could not have been made without the bank card linked to the account. Also a customer with a London address but transacting large withdrawals in Preston is going to look highly unusual. The CSA would pick up on this straight away. It would mean someone else had your bank card and your passport or driving licence original!

Is that true? So bill payment fraud is higher than debit card fraud?

How does the fraudster request that the bill payment goes through?

Aren't all of Abbey's counters open and fairly visible? Inside job is highly unlikely due to sheer number of staff witnesses and chance of being seen on CCTV.

Just plain, good ol' fashioned fraud.

  • The most a cashier has in their tin is 4k, anymore than that and it is banked out to the vault. A withdrawal of 4.5k would be money taken out of the safe by the CSM. Inside fraud is highly unlikely unless the CSA and CSM are in it together but the chances of getting away with it are slim.

99.9% of all staff fraud is god damn dumb and easy to spot in about 12 seconds.

Interesting how you are looking at blaming a bank for releasing money rather than considering how your details were cloned. You have had a massive cash transaction through an internet poker site - can you be certain all the details you supplied to this site are 100% secure?

It looks like ID fraud which will have been done by an extremely well organised group. Getting your details, having clone cards made, false ID - the lot.

You won the money in May, it's now July, plenty of time for them to sort things - and how conincidental this happens just after you have won a large amount of money.
